How to Plan a Sri Lanka Holiday: A Step-by-Step Guide

Planning a first trip to Sri Lanka can feel like a lot of decisions at once — how long to stay, which regions to prioritise, how to get between them, whether to book a fixed package or build something custom. Here's a straightforward order to work through them.

Step 1: Decide how long to stay

As a rough guide: a long weekend (3–4 nights) suits a single-region trip like the Cultural Triangle or Kandy. A week to ten days lets you combine the Cultural Triangle, hill country and a safari, ending on the coast. Two weeks or more allows a full loop of the island without feeling rushed. Step 2: Pick your regions

Rather than trying to see everywhere, pick two or three of: the Cultural Triangle (ancient sites), the hill country (tea estates, cooler climate, scenic train), a wildlife park (leopards or elephants), and the coast (beaches, whale watching, watersports). Step 3: Check the season against your route

Step 4: Decide between a fixed package and a tailor-made trip

A fixed package is simple to book but harder to adjust once confirmed. A tailor-made private tour costs a similar amount for most group sizes and gives you control over pace, hotel category, and which stops to add or skip — with a private driver-guide for the whole trip rather than a shared coach group. Step 5: Book flights and transport

Once your route and dates are set, book international flights into Colombo (Bandaranaike International Airport) and confirm your ground transport. If you're not booking a private driver for the whole trip, decide in advance which legs you'll cover by train, which by private transfer, and which by public transport.

Step 6: Sort your entry requirements and packing
