12 Best Things to Do in Ella, Sri Lanka

Ella is a small hill-country town that punches well above its size. It's compact enough to explore on foot or by a short tuk-tuk ride, with viewpoints, waterfalls and one of the most photographed railway bridges in Asia all close to the centre.

1. Nine Arch Bridge

Ella's best-known landmark: a colonial-era railway viaduct built almost entirely of stone and brick, set among tea terraces. Try to time your visit around a train crossing — check locally for the current timetable, since it shifts.

2. Little Adam's Peak

A short, well-marked walk (around 45 minutes to an hour each way) to a viewpoint over the Ella Gap, with tea plantations on both sides. A gentler alternative to Ella Rock, and a good sunrise or sunset spot.

3. Ella Rock

A longer, steeper hike than Little Adam's Peak, rewarded with a wider view across the valley. Best done early morning with a local guide, since the trail isn't always clearly marked.

4. Ravana Falls

A roadside waterfall a short drive from town, at its most dramatic just after the rainy season.

5. Ride the Kandy–Ella scenic train

Regularly ranked among the world's most scenic rail journeys, running through tea estates, tunnels and misty hill country. Even a short stretch of this line is worth building into an itinerary.

6. Visit a working tea factory

Several estates around Ella offer short tours covering how tea is picked, withered, rolled and graded, usually finishing with a tasting.

7. Demodara Loop and Nine Arch views

Just outside Ella, the railway spirals through a hillside in a rare loop — worth combining with a Nine Arch Bridge visit on the same outing.

8. Walk through the tea terraces at golden hour

Simple, free, and one of the best photo opportunities in the hill country — the terraced tea bushes catch the light beautifully in the late afternoon.

9. Visit Rawana Ella Cave

A cave associated with local legend, a short uphill walk from the falls.

10. Try Sri Lankan hill-country cuisine

Ella's small-town food scene has grown considerably, with cafés serving Sri Lankan curries alongside international options — worth a slower evening between hikes.

11. Zipline over the valley

A handful of operators run ziplines with views over the Ella Gap, for a faster-paced afternoon between the walks.

12. Day trip to Lipton's Seat

Further out (around 1.5–2 hours by road), the viewpoint where Sir Thomas Lipton is said to have surveyed his tea estates — a longer excursion, but a rewarding one if you have an extra day.

Getting to Ella
