Gal Oya National Park, in Sri Lanka's eastern interior, is one of the least-visited of the island's major parks — quieter, less developed, and built around a very different safari experience to Yala or Udawalawe. Its centrepiece hike, locally known as Monkey Mountain (or Viyana Hela), is one of the more genuinely off-the-beaten-path experiences still available on the island.

What makes Gal Oya different

Most Sri Lankan safaris happen in open-top jeeps. Gal Oya's main draw is a boat safari across the Senanayake Samudraya reservoir, where elephants are regularly seen swimming between islands — a wildlife encounter genuinely distinct from anywhere else on the island's safari circuit.

The Monkey Mountain hike

Monkey Mountain is a rocky hill rising around 520 metres, named for the resident monkey population and known locally as Viyana Hela. It's a guided trek — typically arranged through a lodge near the park, with an early departure to reach the summit before the heat builds.

  • Duration: roughly 3-4 hours round trip.
  • Distance: around 7 kilometres total.
  • The reward: panoramic views over Senanayake Samudraya Lake, the surrounding forest, and — with some luck — wildlife spotted along the way.

The site also holds local cultural and spiritual significance, and is home to plant and animal species not commonly seen elsewhere on the island.

Getting there

Gal Oya sits near the town of Ampara in eastern Sri Lanka, roughly a 7-8 hour drive from Colombo. It's genuinely remote by Sri Lankan standards, which is precisely why it stays quiet — most itineraries don't reach this far east, so a Gal Oya add-on works best for travellers with enough time to make the distance worthwhile, or those combining it with the east coast.

Worth the distance for the right traveller

Gal Oya isn't a convenient add-on to a standard Cultural Triangle or hill-country loop — it requires deliberately building extra time into your route. For travellers who've already done a more conventional Sri Lanka trip, or who specifically want a quieter, less-touristed wildlife experience, it's a strong case for a longer, more adventurous itinerary.
