Nuwara Eliya Travel Guide: Sri Lanka's Tea Country

Nuwara Eliya sits at close to 1,900 metres above sea level, which gives it a genuinely cooler climate than almost anywhere else on the island — daytime temperatures rarely climb much past the low 20s°C, and evenings can be properly cold. Locals have long called it "Little England," a nod to the colonial-era buildings, the golf course, and the tea-country chill the British hill-station planners came here for in the first place.

Tea estates and factories

This is the heart of Sri Lanka's Ceylon tea industry. A handful of working estates around Nuwara Eliya offer short factory tours — you'll see the leaves withered, rolled, fermented and graded, usually finishing with a tasting on-site. It's a genuinely interesting hour, not just a shop stop, and one of the more memorable "how does this actually get made" experiences on a Sri Lanka trip.

Horton Plains and World's End

A short drive from town, Horton Plains National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its montane grassland and the dramatic World's End viewpoint — a cliff that drops away almost 900 metres. It's best visited early in the morning, both for the light and because cloud tends to roll in and obscure the view later in the day.

Gregory Lake and the town itself

Lake Gregory, in the centre of town, is an easy spot for a walk or a paddleboat ride, and Nuwara Eliya's colonial architecture — the post office, the old racecourse, the golf club — is worth a slow wander if you enjoy that kind of history. The town's cooler evenings also make it one of the more comfortable places on a Sri Lanka itinerary to actually enjoy a hot meal outdoors.

When to visit
