Trincomalee, Sri Lanka

A port town on Sri Lanka's east coast, historically valued for its large natural harbour. Trincomalee is home to the Koneswaram Temple, perched on a headland overlooking the ocean, and its beaches — quieter than the south coast's — are a starting point for boat trips to Pigeon Island.

Trincomalee beaches and the east coast season

The Trincomalee beaches suit travellers who like quiet sand and clear water. Nilaveli has a long, calm shore, and boats run from there to Pigeon Island National Park for snorkelling over coral and small reef fish. The town itself has one of the world's great natural harbours, Fort Frederick and the Koneswaram temple on its headland. The east coast has its best weather from about May to September, when the south-west is wet.

  • Nilaveli and Pigeon Island

A calm shore, and boats to the coral for snorkelling.

  • About six hours from Colombo

So it suits a longer tour with Sigiriya or Polonnaruwa.

  • A mid-year beach

A good choice when the west and south coasts are rough.

Getting to Trincomalee

Trincomalee is a long drive from Colombo, roughly six hours by road, so we usually suggest it as part of a longer tour that also includes Sigiriya or Polonnaruwa. It is a good way to balance a Sri Lanka trip in the middle of the year when the west and south coasts are rough. Expect simple, friendly hotels and fresh seafood. Tell us which months you can travel and we will say honestly whether the east or the south is the better beach for you.

Pigeon Island trips depend on sea conditions and are best booked for the morning. Snorkelling gear is available at the beach, and we can arrange a boat ahead if you let us know your group size.
