Destination guide

Sigiriya, Sri Lanka

A 5th-century rock fortress rising roughly 200 metres above the central plains, built by King Kashyapa and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The climb to the summit — past the famous frescoes and the stone Lion’s Paw entrance — takes most visitors around 1.5 to 2 hours round trip, and is best started early to beat both the heat and the crowds.

What to expect

  • The climb itself, plus the frescoes and mirror wall partway up
  • Panoramic views over the surrounding jungle from the summit
  • Best tackled first thing in the morning — it's a genuine climb, not a stroll

Sigiriya tour: how to climb Lion Rock without the crowds

Any Sigiriya tour revolves around the rock fortress built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century. The climb passes the famous frescoes and the mirror wall before reaching the lion paws and a long stairway to the summit. Go early. The air is cooler, the light is soft and the tour groups have not arrived. Allow about three hours in total and wear shoes with grip, because the final steps are steep and open to the wind.

What else to do around Sigiriya

The rock is only half of the story. Pidurangala, the smaller rock next door, gives you the classic view of Sigiriya itself at sunset. Village tours offer a bullock cart ride, a lunch cooked on a clay stove and a boat trip across a tank. Jeep safaris at Minneriya or Kaudulla can show wild elephants, depending on the season. Dambulla cave temple is a short drive away, so many of our tours combine all of these over two nights.

Tickets for the fortress are priced for foreign visitors and paid at the gate, so keep some cash or a card ready. If you do not want to climb, the water gardens and the museum at the base are still worth an hour.
