Destination guide

Ella, Sri Lanka

A small hill-country town that’s become one of the most popular stops on the island, built around hiking trails and the scenic Kandy–Ella railway. The Nine Arch Bridge, a colonial-era railway viaduct, and the Little Adam’s Peak and Ella Rock hikes are the main draws.

Ella tour: bridge, peaks and one very good train ride

An Ella tour is about views and easy walks. The Nine Arch Bridge is the best known sight, and it is most atmospheric when a blue train crosses it. Little Adam's Peak is a gentle climb of an hour or so with tea fields all the way up, while Ella Rock is a longer hike for people who like a challenge. Ravana Falls is beside the main road and makes a quick stop on the drive towards Yala or the south coast.

Getting to Ella and how many nights to stay

The train from Kandy or Nuwara Eliya is part of the experience, and we can help you with seats in the right class. Many travellers stay two nights in Ella, which leaves one full day for walking and one for the bridge and the falls. The town is small, so expect cafés, homestays and boutique hotels instead of big resorts. Rain can cloud the viewpoints, so we also suggest flexible mornings. Message us your dates and we will fit Ella into your route.

If you travel on a budget, a simple homestay is a good choice here, and if you want comfort, there are boutique hotels with valley views. Either way, bring a rain jacket, because showers can arrive without warning.
