Private Tour · 3★ & 2★ hotels Hill Country & Heritage TrailElephants, cave temples, a rock fortress, a hill capital, tea slopes and the Ella viaduct in six days, with a private vehicle and an English-speaking driver-guide. Private Tour · 3★ & 2★ hotelsModerate intensityEnglish-speaking guide Tour priceFromUSD 469per person A 6 day Sri Lanka hill country tour suits travellers who want the island's ancient sites and its cool green mountains in one compact loop, with no beach stay and no safari to squeeze in. From the airport you head inland to the elephant orphanage at Pinnawala and the painted caves of Dambulla, climb the rock fortress at Sigiriya, spend an evening in the royal city of Kandy, then ride up into the tea country at Nuwara Eliya and across to Ella, before a final night in Colombo. It will please couples, friends and families with school-age children, provided everyone accepts a few hours of road each day in exchange for variety. Why choose the 6 day Sri Lanka hill country tourThis route sits between a quick two-night taster and a full island circuit. A shorter hill tour usually leaves out the ancient sites; a longer one adds wildlife parks and a week by the sea. Here you keep only the heritage and the highlands, which makes it a sensible first look at Sri Lanka, or a tidy add-on to a longer journey through Asia. The pace is steady. Most days combine one or two main visits with a drive of two to four hours, and the only real effort is the stairway at Sigiriya, which you can take slowly or skip in favour of a gentler view. The route and your five nightsThe first night is in Habarana, a village of lakes and forest at the centre of the Cultural Triangle. The second is in Kandy, the third in Nuwara Eliya, the fourth in Ella and the fifth in Colombo, close to the airport road. Each leg is a real change of scenery: dry-zone forest and reservoirs, then temple hills and lakeside streets, then terraced tea slopes at well over a thousand metres, then the open drop of the Ella Gap, and finally the capital. Because you sleep somewhere new almost every night, you do not need to unpack more than once or twice a day. Five moments worth the driveThe first is the riverside bath at Pinnawala, where a herd of rescued elephants is led down to the water and splashes about like children. The second is Sigiriya, where a royal palace was built on top of a column of rock and the path passes frescoes, a polished wall and a gateway shaped like a lion. The third is evening in Kandy, with drumming, incense and a dance show built around fire. The fourth is a tea factory, where you can follow the leaf from the bush to the cup. The fifth is the Nine Arch Bridge near Ella, a curve of stone laid across a green valley that looks even better with a train rolling over it. Comfort, breakfast and your driver-guideYou have a private air-conditioned vehicle and an English-speaking driver-guide for the whole journey, from airport pick-up to final drop-off. Your guide explains each site before you walk in, handles the logistics and is happy to stop for photographs or a cup of tea. Hotels are comfortable 2 and 3-star properties, and breakfast is included each morning. Lunch and dinner are left open so you can eat where you like, and your driver-guide will point you to good local restaurants. Entry tickets at each site are bought on the day. When to go for hill country and heritageThe hills and the west dry out between roughly December and March, and April can still be pleasant. The Cultural Triangle is at its best from roughly April to September, so the shoulder months around March and April suit this mixed route well. In wetter weeks the waterfalls run fuller and the tea turns a deeper green, though afternoon cloud can hide the views. Nuwara Eliya turns cold after dark in every season, so bring a fleece and a light rain jacket. Make it your ownNothing here is fixed in stone, and we can reshape the programme. You can swap a road transfer for the scenic train between Kandy, Nanu Oya or Ella, add a pre-dawn walk to World's End at Horton Plains, give Ella a second night for hiking, or end the trip on a beach instead of in Colombo. Tell us your dates, your group and the pace you want, and we will adjust the plan around you. Tour highlights
Day-by-day itinerary![]() Your driver-guide from Volata Travels is waiting in the arrivals hall, and you set off inland at once. Habarana is a long way from the airport, around three and a half to four hours of pure driving, so the day is built around two worthwhile pauses. Pinnawala sits roughly ninety minutes beyond Colombo, and Dambulla comes shortly before your hotel. A morning arrival works best; if your flight lands later, tell us and we will trim the plan. The story of Pinnawala starts in 1975, with a coconut grove of some twenty-five acres on the banks of the Maha Oya, which the Wildlife Department converted into a home for elephants found abandoned or injured in the jungle. What you see now is a managed herd, not a wild one. Twice daily the animals file down to the river for a wash, and the youngest calves, those under three, still drink from bottles held by keepers and volunteers. Plan on two hours or a little more, and ask your guide when the feeding and bathing sessions fall, as the times shift. After lunch you continue to Dambulla, where a great overhanging boulder, roughly 160 metres high, shelters five separate caves. You climb a stairway of worn stone to reach the entrance. Within sit 153 Buddha images, plus three kings and four gods, and the ceilings are covered with paintings that tell the Buddha's life. The caves have been a place of worship since the third and second centuries BC, and UNESCO listed the complex in 1991. Cover your shoulders and knees, remove your shoes, and bring socks, because the stone can be hot in the afternoon. A short drive then takes you to Habarana, a village of lakes and forest at the heart of the Cultural Triangle. Check in, rest, and eat wherever you like; your driver-guide can suggest a restaurant. ![]() Start early after breakfast, because Sigiriya is kindest before the heat builds. The rock is about 25 minutes from Habarana, and the later drive to Kandy takes roughly three hours, so it is a full but rewarding day. Locals sometimes call Sigiriya the eighth wonder of the world, and the reason is clear as soon as the rock appears over the trees. In the fifth century King Kashyapa made it his fortress and palace, and the climb retraces his royal approach. The path crosses the water gardens, runs along the glossy Mirror Wall, passes the frescoed celestial maidens and reaches the gateway of the lion's paws. From there about 1,200 steps lead to the palace ruins, some 200 metres above the forest. Take water, wear shoes with grip, and go at your own speed; the view from the top covers the whole plain. Afterwards you return to your hotel to collect your luggage. The road to Kandy passes Matale, where a spice garden shows how pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, vanilla and cloves grow. A guide explains how each plant is used in cooking and in Ayurvedic remedies, with no obligation to buy. A little further on, a tea estate near Kandy lets you walk between the bushes and watch how a day's pluck is withered, rolled and dried in the factory, with a cup of fresh tea at the end. Evening belongs to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. The story goes that a princess from Orissa smuggled the Buddha's tooth to the island in her hair in the fourth century, and pilgrims have honoured it since. Cover up, and leave your shoes outside. After the temple comes a Kandyan dance show lasting about an hour, with drummers, acrobats and fire-walkers in bright costumes, before you settle into your hotel in Kandy. ![]() After breakfast the road climbs steadily out of Kandy into the central hills. Reaching Nuwara Eliya takes between three and four hours behind the wheel, yet the stops stretch it across most of the day, and every bend gives wider views of terraced slopes. This is the heart of Ceylon tea country. The British saw that the cool, damp highlands suited the crop and converted huge areas to plantations, and tea has remained the island's leading farm export. At a working factory you can follow the leaf through plucking, withering, rolling, fermenting, drying and grading, then sit down for a tasting. Pickers move along the rows with baskets on their backs, so you may see them at work as you walk the terraces. Farther up, Ramboda Falls tumbles down in tiers beside the road, and a brightly painted Hindu temple to Hanuman stands close by. Photographs are easy here, and it is a handy place to stretch your legs before the final climb. At about 1,900 metres, Nuwara Eliya has earned the name Little England, thanks to its colonial villas, neat lawns and flower borders. You will see it on a short city tour. The market is lively and a good place to try fruit and local snacks. Hakgala Botanical Gardens spread across terraces below a sheer rock, with roses, tree ferns and orchids, and if you are lucky you will spot monkeys or blue magpies. The nearby Seetha Amman temple is a bright Hindu shrine covered in painted figures and is linked to the Ramayana. The air cools quickly in the afternoon. Keep a jumper in your day bag, since evenings here can be properly cold. Meals Breakfast Accommodation London Eye Hotel Nuwara Eliya or similar Included Activities

![]() Today you leave the chill of Nuwara Eliya and descend to Ella. Allow about three hours for the road, which is best spread across the whole day. The countryside changes steadily, from tea slopes to vegetable terraces to open valleys with distant ridges. The first big stop is the Nine Arch Bridge near Ella. The viaduct was commissioned in 1921, and its builders used only stone blocks and cement alone, without any steel inside. Nine tall arches carry the railway on a graceful bend between two hillsides, with jungle on both sides. Walk down the path to the base, take photographs from the side, and, if the timing suits, wait for a train to cross. Your guide can ask around for likely train times, so the wait stays short. Ravana Falls is the second stop and lies beside the road. In the rainy season the water spreads wide and falls about 82 feet from a hollow, oval rock, said to resemble a drooping areca flower. In the dry months the flow shrinks. Local legend links the place to King Ravana of the Ramayana, and the falls sit inside a small wildlife sanctuary. There are stalls nearby selling snacks and drinks. Then you reach Ella and check in. The village looks out through the Ella Gap, and the late afternoon is perfect for slow wandering. You could take the easy hour-long walk to Little Adam's Peak through tea fields, or simply sit in a cafe with the view and watch the light change. ![]() This is the travelling day, so it helps to start with a relaxed breakfast and an early look at the view. If you wake early, the morning walk to Little Adam's Peak takes roughly an hour from the village through tea fields and makes a gentle farewell to the hills. It is optional, and you can tell your driver-guide the night before whether you want it. The drive to Colombo is a long one, taking most of the day, but it is far smoother than it used to be thanks to the expressway that carries you across the south and towards the capital. Your driver-guide will plan comfort stops along the way, for tea, lunch and fresh air. The scenery gradually flattens from hill country to coconut plantations and busy towns as you descend towards the coast, so it is worth keeping an eye on the window for the first hour. You arrive in Colombo in the late afternoon or evening and check in to your hotel. There is no sightseeing in the programme today, so the time is yours. If you still have energy, ask your driver-guide to take you to Galle Face Green, the sea-front promenade where families fly kites and buy snacks from stalls as the sun goes down. It is an easy and local way to spend your last evening on the island. Have dinner wherever you choose. Colombo has plenty of restaurants, and your driver-guide can recommend places for a last taste of rice and curry or seafood. ![]() Enjoy a last breakfast at your hotel in Colombo and check out at a time that suits your flight. From there it is roughly an hour by road to the airport at Katunayake, with your driver-guide at the wheel. Leave a comfortable margin for traffic on the way, since the roads around the capital can be busy in the morning. If your flight is late and you would like a short outing, ask us in advance. A brief walk along the sea front or a visit to a market can fit in before the transfer, though it is not part of the standard programme. Otherwise your tour ends at the departures hall, with a final goodbye from your driver-guide. Meals Breakfast Included Activities

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 6 days enough for Sigiriya, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Ella?
It is enough for a good overview, provided you accept that this is a moving tour with a new hotel almost every night. You see the main heritage sites and the central highlands, but you will not have long lazy hours in any one place. If you want more time, the usual solution is to add a night in Ella or a day of rest, or to extend into a longer route with safaris and a beach.
How long are the drives on this tour?
Day one is the longest at roughly three and a half to four hours between the airport and the Cultural Triangle, broken up by Pinnawala and Dambulla. Kandy to Nuwara Eliya takes three to four hours, and Nuwara Eliya to Ella about three. The last day to Colombo is also a long one. Your driver-guide plans regular stops, so the road time passes quickly.
How hard is the Sigiriya climb?
The climb has about 1,200 steps, some of them steep and narrow, and it can be hot. Most reasonably fit visitors manage it in a couple of hours with rests. Going early helps with both the heat and the crowds. Take water, wear sturdy shoes and go slowly. If you prefer not to climb to the summit, you can still enjoy the water gardens, the lower terraces and the views from the base.
What is the best time of year for this hill country tour?
The hills and the west of the island are driest from about December to March, while the Cultural Triangle is best from roughly April to September. March and April therefore suit this mixed route particularly well. Outside those months the tour still works, but expect showers in the hills, fuller waterfalls and cloudier views. Nuwara Eliya is cool at any time of year.
Does the tour include the scenic train from Kandy or to Ella?
The standard programme uses your private vehicle on every leg, which gives you flexibility to stop at tea estates and waterfalls. If you would like to take the famous hill railway for one section, we can arrange it. Train tickets are bought separately and seats must be booked well in advance, so tell us early. The drive in between then goes with your driver-guide to meet you.
Is this tour suitable for children?
Yes, particularly for children aged about seven and over. They usually love the elephants at Pinnawala and the fire show in Kandy. The long drives and the Sigiriya steps are the main challenges, but you can choose how far to climb. Ask us about child seats and family rooms when you enquire, and we will make sure the pace suits them.
What should I pack for the hill country?
Light clothes that cover shoulders and knees are best for temples, with socks for hot stone floors. You also need a warm layer or fleece for Nuwara Eliya, where evenings and early mornings are cold, plus a light rain jacket, sturdy shoes for Sigiriya and the walks near Ella, a hat and sun cream. A small day bag and a refillable water bottle are helpful on every day.
What is included and what do I pay separately?
The tour includes your private air-conditioned vehicle, an English-speaking driver-guide and hotel nights with breakfast each morning. Entrance fees at sites such as Sigiriya, Dambulla and the botanical gardens are paid separately, as are lunches, dinners, train tickets and optional activities. Your driver-guide can tell you what to expect at each stop so there are no surprises.
What's included in the 6-day tour price?
Meet and greet at Bandaranaike International Airport; 5 nights in 3-star and 2-star hotels (or similar), double or twin room sharing; a single room if you travel alone; Daily breakfast at your hotels (bed and breakfast); All transfers and sightseeing in a private air-conditioned vehicle; English-speaking driver-guide throughout the tour; Fuel, parking, driver accommodation and highway fees. The tour costs USD 469 per person when two adults share a room, or USD 901 for one traveller in a single room, for 5 nights / 6 days. These prices are valid for travel from 8 October 2026 to 30 November 2027.
What's not included?
International flights and the Sri Lanka ETA visa fee; Lunches, dinners and drinks (breakfast is included); Entrance fees and activity fees (Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, Dambulla Cave Temple, Sigiriya Rock, Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and cultural show, Hakgala Botanical Gardens); Optional tours and optional activities; Train tickets (if you choose the scenic train); Hotel supplements when you travel on 24 December and 31 December (New Year), and the Christmas supplement on 24 December; Tips, porterage and personal expenses; Early check-in and late check-out at hotels; Travel insurance and bank charges.
Is the price the same on 24 and 31 December?
Not quite. Hotels charge a compulsory supplement for the nights of 24 December (Christmas Eve) and 31 December (New Year's Eve), and these supplements are not included in the tour price. If your dates include either night, tell us when you enquire and we will confirm the supplement for the hotels on your route before you book.
Can I customize this tour?
Yes. The order of stops, the number of nights in each place, the hotels and the activities can all be adjusted to your dates, pace and budget — this is a private tour built around you, not a fixed group departure. Tell us what you would like to change and we will send a revised quote.
What is the cancellation policy?
All cancellations must be received in writing by your Volata Tour Consultant. Cancellations received up to 61 days before departure result in the loss of the deposit. Between 60 and 46 days before departure a charge of 25% of the tour price applies; between 45 and 29 days, 50%; between 28 and 15 days, 75%; and 14 days or less before departure the entire tour price is forfeited. Airline tickets follow the refund policy of each airline, and special event tickets follow the policy of each event.
