Private Tour · 3★ & 2★ hotels Cultural Triangle, Hills & Yala SafariTwo jeep safaris, a rock fortress, a temple city, a train through tea country and a Yala dawn drive, finished with beach days on the south-west coast. Private Tour · 3★ & 2★ hotelsModerate intensityEnglish-speaking guide Tour priceFromUSD 625per person An 8 day Sri Lanka culture and safari tour gives you two very different sides of the island in one go: the ancient kingdoms of the north and the wild country of the south, linked by tea hills and finished on the beach. You begin with the elephant orphanage at Pinnawala, the cave temple at Dambulla and the rock fortress of Sigiriya, join a jeep safari at Minneriya for a chance to see wild elephants, continue to Kandy and the hill railway, and cross to the south for a morning in Yala. It is built for travellers who like to do a lot, but want a proper rest before flying home. Why choose the 8 day Sri Lanka culture and safari tourThe tour suits couples, friends and families with older children who enjoy variety and do not mind early starts. It is a more active programme than a simple hills-and-beach trip. The safari at Yala begins before dawn, Sigiriya involves some 1,200 steps, and the drive on day six is long. A shorter version would drop one of these elements; a longer one would add days at each stop. Eight days is the shortest length that keeps both safaris, the train and a decent beach finish. The route and your seven nightsYou spend two nights near Sigiriya, one in Kandy, one in Nuwara Eliya, one in Tissamaharama beside Yala, and two in Bentota. The Cultural Triangle is where the island's early kings built their cities, and the extra night means you can climb the rock and see elephants without hurrying. Kandy is the hill capital, Nuwara Eliya the cool tea town, and Tissamaharama a lakeside base close to the park gates. Bentota ends the trip with sand and river water. Safaris, a hill train and other highlightsThe first safari is in the late afternoon at Minneriya, an old reservoir where elephants come to the shore to drink and graze, particularly in the drier months. Yala, the second, is known for one of the highest densities of leopards anywhere, along with elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and peacocks. In between, the programme has a scenic train from Kandy to Nanu Oya, which follows tracks laid in the 1860s through tea estates, tunnels and waterfalls. In Ella you stop at the Nine Arch Bridge and Ravana Falls, and on the way to Bentota you pass a coastal blowhole, stilt fishermen and Galle Fort. Comfort, breakfast and your driver-guideA private air-conditioned vehicle and an English-speaking driver-guide are with you throughout, apart from the train ride, after which your driver-guide meets you at the other end. Hotels are comfortable 2 and 3-star properties, with breakfast included each morning. Lunch and dinner are your own choice, and your driver-guide can recommend good restaurants. Entrance fees, jeep hire and train tickets are paid separately; seats on the train must be booked well in advance. When to travelElephants gather at Minneriya in the drier months, roughly July to October, and the Cultural Triangle is generally driest from April to September. Yala is best from about February to September. The south-west coast is calmest between December and March. That means this route works well in the middle of the year, but safaris can still be enjoyable in shoulder months, with greener scenery and fewer visitors. Bring a warm layer for Nuwara Eliya whatever the season. Customise your safari tourIf you want longer in the wild, we can add a night at Yala or a half-day safari at Udawalawe, another park where elephants are seen well. If you prefer to travel more slowly, an extra night in Kandy or Ella breaks up the road time, and extra nights in Bentota are easy to add. You can also swap the train for the road if you would rather keep your own schedule. Send us your dates, your group and your interests, and we will adjust the programme to suit. Tour highlights
Day-by-day itinerary![]() You land, meet your driver-guide at the airport and head north into the Cultural Triangle. It is a long first day, roughly three and a half to four hours of driving to Sigiriya without stops, so it helps to arrive in the morning. Two pauses along the route break it up well. The first is Pinnawala, about an hour and a half beyond Colombo. The elephant orphanage began in 1975 on a coconut estate beside the Maha Oya river and cares for calves left alone or injured in the wild. It aims to resemble a natural home, with a few exceptions. The elephants are taken to the river twice daily to bathe, and the youngest are still fed from bottles. Plan a stay of two hours or so and ask your guide when the bath is due. The second pause is Dambulla. Five cave shrines sit beneath an enormous overhanging rock, reached by a short climb up stone steps with a view across the plains. Inside you find more than 150 Buddha statues, along with painted ceilings that depict scenes from the Buddha's life. People have worshipped here for over two thousand years, and UNESCO protects the site. Remove your shoes, cover your knees and shoulders, and bring socks if the floor is hot. From Dambulla it is a short drive to your hotel near Sigiriya, where the rock rises over the treetops. Settle in, rest, and choose a restaurant for dinner. Tomorrow starts early, so an early night is sensible. Accommodation Wewa Addara Hotel - Hotel by the lake or similar Included Activities

![]() Today has two halves: a climb in the cool of the morning and a safari in the late afternoon. Keep the middle of the day for a long lunch and a rest, because the heat is strongest then. Sigiriya works best when you reach it soon after the gates open. King Kashyapa chose this rock in the fifth century as a fortress and palace, and it stands about 200 metres above the forest. The path starts in the water gardens and passes the Mirror Wall and then reaches the frescoes of celestial maidens, painted on the rock face. Next you arrive at the Lion's Paws gateway. From there roughly 1,200 steps take you to the summit and the remains of the royal palace. Carry water and wear sturdy shoes. You can go slowly, and the view over the plain rewards the effort. In the late afternoon you drive to Minneriya, built around an ancient reservoir. When the water level falls in the drier months, wild elephants gather on the exposed shore, and sometimes herds with many calves come down together. This event is known as the Gathering, and it is best from roughly July to October. A jeep takes you around the shore for two to three hours, which suits the light. Wildlife can never be promised, but the chance of seeing elephants is high. You return to your hotel near Sigiriya after dark. Dust and sun are the main discomforts, so pack a scarf and a hat for the jeep. Meals Breakfast Accommodation Wewa Addara Hotel - Hotel by the lake or similar Included Activities

![]() After breakfast you leave the Cultural Triangle and drive south to the hills, with two stops in Matale on the way to Kandy. Allow about three hours of driving in total, more with the visits. The first stop is a spice garden in Matale, where you spend about an hour. The town sits in the hills north of Kandy and is the island's spice country. Your guide walks you between cardamom, pepper, cinnamon, vanilla and clove plants, explains how each is grown and processed, and shows how some are used in Ayurvedic remedies. The farmers belong to a cooperative, so you can buy spices at fair prices if you want to take some home. The second stop, again about an hour, is the Sri Muthumariamman Hindu temple. Its tower is a dense stack of brightly painted gods and animals, and it stands out against the town. Remove your shoes at the door and cover your shoulders and knees. The Aluvihare rock temple is close to Matale if you would like a quieter extra stop, which we can arrange on request. You reach Kandy in the afternoon. The hill capital was the last royal city of the Sinhalese kings and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Your visit centres on the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, which holds a relic of the Buddha, and then on a cultural show between five and six in the evening. The performance is usually held near the temple; if it is cancelled, your guide will arrange a city walk instead. Afterwards you check in to your hotel in Kandy. ![]() After breakfast the programme leaves the road behind for part of the way. You first visit a tea plantation near Kandy, then ride the scenic train up to the hill country, one of the best-known rail journeys in Asia. The plantation visit is short and practical. You walk among tea bushes, watch how the leaf is picked and processed, and taste a fresh cup. The central highlands became tea country under British rule, when planters saw that the climate and the slopes suited the crop, and the industry remains a major earner. Even people who rarely drink tea enjoy the terraces, which form a patchwork of greens across the hillsides. Your driver-guide then drops you at Kandy station for the train. The Kandy to Ella line follows the original tracks built by the British in 1864, first to carry tea and coffee down from the estates. It climbs through tunnels, over bridges and past waterfalls to Nanu Oya, the station for Nuwara Eliya. The ride takes roughly four to five hours. Tickets are bought separately and seats are booked in advance, so tell us early. Keep your valuables with you, sit by an open window if you can, and bring snacks and water. At Nanu Oya your driver-guide is waiting to take you up to Nuwara Eliya. The town sits high at around 1,900 metres and is nicknamed Little England for its lawns, villas and gardens. You have the rest of the afternoon to rest. Evenings are cold, so wear a jumper and keep a jacket nearby. Meals Breakfast Accommodation London Eye Hotel Nuwara Eliya or similar Included Activities

![]() This is a descent day, from the highest point of the trip to the edge of the southern plains. After breakfast you leave Nuwara Eliya and drive to Ella, about three hours by road, and then continue to Tissamaharama, roughly two hours beyond Ella. Two sightseeing stops fit neatly in between. The first is the Nine Arch Bridge, a viaduct of stone and cement laid in the early twentieth century. Its arches curve through the jungle with no steel reinforcement, and the effect is elegant. Plan around an hour here. Walk along the track, find a spot with a clear view, and try to see a train cross. Your guide can check the timetable. Please stay off the rails when a train approaches. The second is Ravana Falls, a wide waterfall beside the road where half an hour is plenty. Local legend links the place to King Ravana, and the fall is most impressive after rain, when it spreads across a rock shaped like a hollow bowl. In the dry season the flow shrinks. There are stalls nearby for a cold drink. Beyond Ella the landscape flattens and warms, with rice paddies and buffalo replacing tea slopes. You arrive at Tissamaharama in the afternoon. This lakeside town beside the ancient Tissa Wewa reservoir is where most Yala safaris start. Check in, eat early, and set your alarm. Tomorrow begins before dawn, so a quiet evening is best. Landmarks
![]() The day begins in the dark. You leave Tissamaharama at around five with a packed breakfast for a morning safari of about three hours in Yala. Jeeps with a tracker enter the park as the light rises, which is when animals are most active and the air is cool. Yala is Sri Lanka's most visited wildlife park, known for one of the highest leopard densities recorded anywhere. Elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, peacocks and many birds also live here. Sightings can never be promised, but a morning drive offers a good chance of seeing several species. Wear neutral colours, bring a hat, a scarf and binoculars, and hold on tight on the rough tracks. The park has an annual closure, so we check the dates in advance. Jeep and entry fees are paid separately. After the safari you drive west along the coast with several stops of roughly 30 minutes. First is the Hummanaya blowhole, where waves force a jet of seawater up through a rock vent, best when the swell is high. Next is Weligama, where fishermen perch on stilts in the shallows. You then reach Galle Fort and spend an hour on its ramparts, which the Portuguese began in the sixteenth century and the Dutch strengthened. The last stop is a turtle hatchery, which protects eggs and releases hatchlings into the sea. This is a very long day, with roughly three hours between Tissamaharama and Galle, and an hour more to Bentota. If it feels too much, we can drop a stop. You reach your hotel in Bentota in the evening and can rest. Meals Breakfast Accommodation Laluna Ayurveda Resort or similar Included Activities

![]() After the early starts of the past week, today is deliberately open. Breakfast is served at the hotel, and the beach is a short walk away. You can swim, read or simply watch the waves, with no schedule to follow. If you want some activity, Bentota offers plenty. The river mouth is calm enough for kayaking, banana-boat rides and jet-skiing, run by local operators and paid separately. The town has a long tradition of Ayurveda, and many hotels and clinics offer massages and herbal treatments. Garden lovers may like the lush grounds created by the Bawa brothers, a short drive from the beach. Ask your driver-guide if you want to visit. Whale watching from Mirissa is possible as an optional extra in the season, which usually runs from about November to April. It means a very early start and roughly two hours of driving each way, so it is worth it only if whales are a priority. Without it, the day is yours to spend as you wish. Swim carefully, as the sea can have strong currents, and use sun cream, because the tropical sun is strong. In the evening, walk along the sand at sunset and choose a seafood restaurant. Pack your bags tonight so tomorrow morning is relaxed. Meals Breakfast Accommodation Laluna Ayurveda Resort or similar Included Activities

![]() After a final breakfast you check out and your driver-guide takes you towards the airport. Bentota to the airport is about two hours by road, so the timing depends on your flight. If you fly in the afternoon or evening, you can use the spare hours for a Colombo city tour. Typical stops are Galle Face Green, the Fort district, Independence Hall and the temples, mosques and churches that stand close together in the city. There is also time for last-minute shopping for tea, spices and crafts. For an early flight we head straight to the airport. Tell us your flight time and we will plan accordingly. Frequently Asked Questions
Is 8 days enough for the Cultural Triangle, the hills and Yala?
It is enough to see the highlights, but the programme is full and you will be on the move most days. You have two nights at Sigiriya, one each in Kandy, Nuwara Eliya and Tissamaharama, and two at Bentota. If you want more relaxed days or an extra safari, we can extend the tour by a day or two.
When is the best time to see elephants at Minneriya?
The Gathering is at its best in the dry season, roughly July to October, when elephants come to the shore as the reservoir shrinks. At other times you may still see elephants, but in smaller numbers. Wildlife can never be promised, though the chance of seeing several herds in the dry months is good. Your guide can tell you what to expect on the day.
Will we see leopards in Yala?
Yala has one of the highest leopard densities known, so there is a real chance, but nobody can promise a sighting. Many visitors see elephants, crocodiles, peacocks and other birds, and sometimes sloth bears. The trackers work hard to find cats, and early morning is a good time. Patience, quiet and a little luck make the difference.
How do the scenic train tickets work?
The train from Kandy to Nanu Oya takes roughly four to five hours and runs on the original tracks built in the 1860s. Tickets are bought separately and seats are booked in advance, as the trains are popular. Your driver-guide takes you to Kandy station and meets you at Nanu Oya with the vehicle and luggage. Tell us early so we can reserve.
How hard is the Sigiriya climb?
It involves about 1,200 steps, some narrow and steep, so you need a reasonable level of fitness and sturdy shoes. Go early to avoid the heat, carry water and rest on the platforms along the way. Most people take a couple of hours to go up and down. If you prefer not to climb to the summit, the water gardens and lower terraces are still worth seeing.
How long are the drives on this tour?
The longest are the first day to Sigiriya, roughly three and a half to four hours; Nuwara Eliya to Tissamaharama via Ella, which takes four to five hours; and day six from Tissamaharama to Bentota, which is about four hours of driving plus the stops. Your driver-guide plans regular breaks, and the scenery keeps the miles interesting.
What should I pack for the safaris and the hills?
Bring neutral-coloured clothing for the jeeps, with a hat, a scarf for dust and binoculars if you have them. For temples you need clothes that cover shoulders and knees. Pack a warm layer for Nuwara Eliya, where evenings are cold, plus swimwear, sun cream and insect repellent for the coast. Comfortable shoes are important for Sigiriya and Ella.
What is included and what is paid separately?
The tour includes your private air-conditioned vehicle, an English-speaking driver-guide and hotel nights with breakfast. Entrance fees, jeep hire and park charges, train tickets, activity fees, lunches and dinners are paid separately. Your guide explains what to expect at each stop, so you can decide on any optional extras as you go.
What's included in the 8-day tour price?
Meet and greet at Bandaranaike International Airport; 7 nights in 3-star and 2-star hotels (or similar), double or twin room sharing; a single room if you travel alone; Daily breakfast at your hotels (bed and breakfast); All transfers and sightseeing in a private air-conditioned vehicle; English-speaking driver-guide throughout the tour; Fuel, parking, driver accommodation and highway fees. The tour costs USD 625 per person when two adults share a room, or USD 1195 for one traveller in a single room, for 7 nights / 8 days. These prices are valid for travel from 8 October 2026 to 30 November 2027.
What's not included?
International flights and the Sri Lanka ETA visa fee; Lunches, dinners and drinks (breakfast is included); Entrance fees and activity fees (Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, Dambulla Cave Temple, Sigiriya Rock, Minneriya jeep safari, Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and cultural show, Yala jeep safari, Galle Fort sites, turtle hatchery); Optional tours and optional activities; Train tickets (if you choose the scenic train); Hotel supplements when you travel on 24 December and 31 December (New Year), and the Christmas supplement on 24 December; Tips, porterage and personal expenses; Early check-in and late check-out at hotels; Travel insurance and bank charges.
Is the price the same on 24 and 31 December?
Not quite. Hotels charge a compulsory supplement for the nights of 24 December (Christmas Eve) and 31 December (New Year's Eve), and these supplements are not included in the tour price. If your dates include either night, tell us when you enquire and we will confirm the supplement for the hotels on your route before you book.
Can I customize this tour?
Yes. The order of stops, the number of nights in each place, the hotels and the activities can all be adjusted to your dates, pace and budget — this is a private tour built around you, not a fixed group departure. Tell us what you would like to change and we will send a revised quote.
What is the cancellation policy?
All cancellations must be received in writing by your Volata Tour Consultant. Cancellations received up to 61 days before departure result in the loss of the deposit. Between 60 and 46 days before departure a charge of 25% of the tour price applies; between 45 and 29 days, 50%; between 28 and 15 days, 75%; and 14 days or less before departure the entire tour price is forfeited.
