Private Tour · 3★ & 2★ hotels 4 Days Sri Lanka Tour: Yala Safari, Nuwara Eliya & KandyFour days that climb from Yala's leopard country up through Ella to the cool tea hills of Nuwara Eliya, and finish in temple-city Kandy. Private Tour · 3★ & 2★ hotelsEasy intensityEnglish-speaking guide Tour priceFromUSD 370per person A 4 day Sri Lanka tour with Yala, Nuwara Eliya and Kandy is the shortest way to taste three very different sides of the island: wild country in the south-east, cool tea hills in the middle and the old royal city in the heart. It suits travellers who land on a short stopover or a tight holiday and still want a safari, a mountain drive and a temple, all in a private vehicle with a driver-guide who knows the road. Who the 4 day Sri Lanka tour with Yala, Nuwara Eliya suitsThe tour is made for people with only a few days, such as honeymooners, friends on a long weekend, or a family adding a taster of the island to a beach holiday elsewhere. It is not strenuous: most of the effort is sitting in the car and walking short distances, and there is no steep climb. What it does ask is patience for the road, because each day includes several hours of driving. In exchange you leave the coast behind quickly and arrive at places most visitors only see after a week or more. The route in four daysYou are collected from Colombo airport and driven south to Tissamaharama, a lakeside town and the gateway to Yala, where you spend the first night. Day two climbs from the dry southern plains towards the hills, passing Ella with its waterfall and viaduct, and ends in Nuwara Eliya, where you sleep at altitude. On the third day you explore the hill town, visit a garden and a tea factory and travel down to Kandy. The last morning is spent in Kandy before the transfer back to the airport. What you will actually seeYala is the reason many people choose this route. Late in the day you climb into an open 4x4 with a tracker, and the park slowly reveals its mix of scrub, rocky outcrops and waterholes. Leopards are the star here, as the density is among the highest known, but elephants, crocodiles, buffalo, peacocks and many birds are seen more reliably, and a sighting of the big cat is a good chance rather than a certainty. On day two the scenery shifts completely. The Ravana Falls tumble beside the road near Ella, and the Nine Arch Bridge curves across a forested valley, a stone viaduct from the early days of the railway. Day three adds Hakgala's rose terraces and tree ferns, the colourful Seetha Amman shrine and a tea factory where you watch the leaf being processed and then taste the result. The final morning finishes with Kandy's Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, a gem gallery and a spice garden at Matale. Comfort and practicalitiesYou travel in an air-conditioned private car or van with an English-speaking driver-guide throughout, and your hotels are comfortable and well sited, with breakfast included each morning at the hotel, while lunch and dinner are paid by you and your driver-guide can suggest good restaurants. Lunch is open, so you can eat at a local restaurant on the way. Entrance fees and the jeep fee for Yala are paid separately. Because the days are full, pack lightly, keep a warm layer within reach for Nuwara Eliya and bring a hat for the safari. When to travelYala is at its best in the drier months, roughly February to September, though the park has an annual closure, so we always check dates before confirming. The hill country is driest from about December to March and stays pleasant into April. February to April therefore suits the full route. Outside that window the tour still works, but expect some rain in the hills or a greener, quieter Yala. Making it fit your tripFour days leave little slack, so tell us your flight times early. If you would rather skip a stop, add a night in Ella, take the scenic train for one section or finish with a day on the coast, we can rearrange the plan to suit. Send us your dates and interests and we will reply with a tailored version and a clear quote. Tour highlights
Day-by-day itinerary![]() Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name board, and the tour begins with a long drive south along the coast and then inland to Tissamaharama. Even if your flight lands in the early hours, the plan is built around it: the road is quiet then, and your driver will stop for breakfast and a rest on the way. Tell us your arrival time in advance so that we can have your room ready. Tissamaharama is a small town beside the ancient Tissa Wewa reservoir, with a white stupa at its centre, and it is the main base for Yala. You check in, shower, eat lunch and rest. After the overnight flight, an hour or two of sleep is the best preparation for the afternoon. In the late afternoon a 4x4 jeep collects you for the safari. Yala is the island's most visited wildlife park, and the combination of scrub forest, grassland, rocky hills and lagoons gives it a rich variety of animals. It has one of the densest populations of leopards known, so you might see one lounging on a rock or in a tree, though nobody can promise it. Elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, spotted deer, wild boar, peacocks and many birds are all part of the picture. The tracker rides with your driver and listens for the alarm calls of deer and monkeys. The drive lasts a few hours and ends close to dusk, when the light is soft and the animals are most active. Dress in neutral colours, wear a hat and bring a light layer, since the open jeep can be breezy. You return to your hotel for an early night, and a late meal from the hotel restaurant if you are hungry. Accommodation Magampura Eco Village Resort or similar Included Activities
Landmarks
![]() After breakfast you leave the dry south and climb towards the hills. The road from Tissamaharama to Ella takes about two hours, and you notice the change as the plains give way to forest, terraced slopes and cooler air. Near Ella you stop at Ravana Falls, a wide cascade beside the road that drops about eighty-two feet from a curved rock. When the water is high, it resembles a drooping areca flower, and in the dry months it thins out to a few threads. It is linked in local legend with King Ravana, the demon king of the Ramayana. The falls lie within a small wildlife sanctuary, and you can take photographs from the roadside viewpoint. Next comes the Nine Arch Bridge, near Demodara. The viaduct was commissioned in 1921 under British rule, and it is built from stone blocks and cement without any steel reinforcement. Its arches curve gracefully through a jungle valley. The best moment is when a train crosses, so your guide will check the timetable and plan a stop that suits. A short walk along the track gives a good view, and Ella's cafés are close enough for a coffee. From Ella to Nuwara Eliya the road takes about three hours, winding past tea estates, waterfalls and mountain villages. You reach the hill town in the late afternoon. At roughly 1,900 metres, it has crisp air and a colonial-era feel, with cottages and trimmed gardens. After checking in, you can wander along the lake or simply warm up with a hot drink. Evenings are cold, so keep a jumper handy for dinner, whether you eat at your hotel or choose a restaurant in town. ![]() Today begins slowly. After breakfast you tour Nuwara Eliya, starting at the central market, where hill-grown carrots, leeks and cabbages sit alongside strawberries and bundles of spices. It is an easy place to see daily life, and your guide can explain what the unfamiliar vegetables and fruits are. You then drive a short way to the Hakgala Botanical Gardens, which climb a hillside below a sheer rock. Cool mountain air lets roses, tree ferns and orchids flourish here in a way that is impossible on the coast, and the gardens are home to monkeys and blue magpies. A relaxed circuit takes about an hour. Near the gardens, the Seetha Amman Temple is a small, brightly painted Hindu shrine crowded with colourful figures. It is tied to the Ramayana, whose heroine Sita is said to have been held captive in these hills. Leave your shoes at the entrance. At about midday you start the descent to Kandy, which takes roughly three to four hours. You stop at a tea factory, where the story of tea in these hills comes to life. Tea was introduced under British rule, and the first plants are said to have been brought from China. You follow the leaf as it is withered, rolled, dried and graded, and then taste a freshly made cup. Further down you pause at Ramboda Falls, a tall cascade beside the road, close to a bright temple of Hanuman. You arrive in Kandy in the late afternoon, check in and choose where to have dinner, at your hotel or at a restaurant in town. Landmarks
![]() Your last morning is spent in Kandy, the old hill capital beside its lake. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is the most revered shrine in the country. According to tradition, a tooth of the Buddha was hidden in a princess's hair and brought to the island in the 4th century. You walk through the halls with pilgrims carrying lotus flowers, and cover your knees and shoulders. Close by, a gem gallery shows how sapphires and other stones are mined, cut and set, with a model of a mine and a short film, and there is no pressure to buy anything. On the way out of town you stop at a spice garden at Matale, where cardamom, pepper, clove and cinnamon grow side by side, and a guide explains their use in cooking and Ayurvedic remedies. You then start the drive to the airport, roughly three hours from Kandy. Your driver will agree the timing with you according to your flight, and the schedule leaves room for lunch and a rest on the way. Meals Breakfast Included Activities

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 4 days enough to see Yala, Nuwara Eliya and Kandy?
It is enough for a first taste, as long as you accept long drives and a quick pace. You get one safari, a day of waterfalls and viaducts, a morning in the hills and a final morning in Kandy. If you can spare a couple more days, an extra night at Ella or Kandy makes the trip more relaxed, and we can arrange it.
Will I see a leopard on the Yala safari?
There is a good chance, since Yala has one of the highest densities of leopards known, but no safari can promise a sighting. Elephants, crocodiles, deer, buffalo and many birds are seen more reliably. The afternoon drive lasts a few hours, with a tracker who listens for alarm calls. Staying quiet and being patient raises your chances.
What is the best time of year for this route?
February to April suits the whole route, because Yala is in its drier months and the hill country is driest from about December to March. Yala is good until about September, but the hills can be wetter then. Yala also has an annual closure, so we always check dates before confirming. Outside these months the tour still works, with greener scenery.
How long are the drives?
Expect long days in the car. Tissamaharama to Ella takes about two hours, Ella to Nuwara Eliya about three, and Nuwara Eliya to Kandy three to four hours with stops. The final drive from Kandy to the airport takes about three hours. Each drive includes a break at something worth seeing, and your driver stops whenever you need.
I land very early in the morning. Is that a problem?
No. Many guests arrive in the small hours, and the plan is designed around it. Your driver meets you at arrivals, the road south is quiet, and your hotel in Tissamaharama is ready for you to rest before the afternoon safari. Please send us your flight details so that we can arrange an early check-in where possible.
How much walking is involved?
Very little. The longest walks are around Hakgala Gardens, the temple in Kandy and a short stroll to the Nine Arch Bridge viewpoint, each usually under an hour and none steep. Most of the safari is done sitting in the jeep. The tour therefore suits visitors of most fitness levels, including older travellers.
What should I pack for the different climates?
The south is hot and dusty, so bring light clothes, a hat, sunscreen and neutral colours for the safari. Nuwara Eliya is cold in the evenings, so pack a fleece or jumper. Temples require covered knees and shoulders, and slip-on shoes help. A light rain jacket is useful in the hills in any season.
Can the tour be extended or changed?
Yes. All Volata Travels tours are private and can be changed. You can add nights in Ella, Kandy or Sigiriya, take the scenic train for part of the hill section, swap Yala for Udawalawe or finish on a beach. Tell us your dates and interests and we will send a revised plan and a clear price.

Is the price the same on 24 and 31 December?
Not quite. Hotels charge a compulsory supplement for the nights of 24 December (Christmas Eve) and 31 December (New Year's Eve), and these supplements are not included in the tour price. If your dates include either night, tell us when you enquire and we will confirm the supplement for the hotels on your route before you book.
Can I customize this tour?
Yes. The order of stops, the number of nights in each place, the hotels and the activities can all be adjusted to your dates, pace and budget — this is a private tour built around you, not a fixed group departure. Tell us what you would like to change and we will send a revised quote.
