Private Tour · 3★ & 2★ hotels 7 Days Sri Lanka Adventure Tour: Sigiriya, Kandy & KitulgalaAncient rock fortress, elephant safari and a Kandy hill walk, then waterfall abseiling and white-water rafting at Kitulgala, finished on a quiet beach. Private Tour · 3★ & 2★ hotelsModerate intensityEnglish-speaking guide Tour priceFromUSD 499per person A 7 day Sri Lanka adventure tour with Kitulgala rafting is for people who like to put down the guidebook now and then and get wet. The week opens with the classic ancient sights, then swings into the rainforest for a waterfall descent on a rope and a run down the Kelani river, and finishes with two nights beside the sea. It suits active couples, friends and families with older children who want culture and adrenaline in the same short holiday. Why choose the 7 day Sri Lanka adventure tour with Kitulgala raftingYou land in Colombo and spend the first night there, which is a gentle way to shake off the flight. On day two you drive inland to the Cultural Triangle and sleep in Habarana. Day three takes you up Sigiriya Rock in the morning and on to Kandy for a night in the hills. Day four brings you down towards the west and into the rainforest at Kitulgala, where you also stay one night. The final two nights are on the coast at Waskaduwa, with a free day in the middle. Hotels are on a bed-and-breakfast plan, so breakfast is included each morning and you choose where to have lunch and dinner; your driver-guide is happy to suggest good local restaurants. Elephants, caves and the rock fortressThe cultural half of the trip is packed into two days. A visit to the cave temple at Dambulla gives you a look at a place of worship that has been in use for over two thousand years, and in the late afternoon you board an open jeep for Minneriya, a park built around an ancient reservoir. In the drier months, herds of wild elephants come to the shore to graze and drink, and families with calves are often seen. Early the next day you climb Sigiriya, the fifth-century fortress of King Kashyapa, passing the frescoes and the Mirror Wall on the way to the summit. A farm walk and the road to KitulgalaCome the afternoon you reach Kandy and swap the car for your own feet on a guided walk through farm country on the edge of the city. You pass vegetable plots, spice trees and village homes, and the three-hour route is gentle enough for most people. The next morning you continue to Kitulgala, a rainforest town on the Kelani river that is the island's centre for adventure sport and was a film location for a classic war movie. Abseiling, rock pools and white waterThe adventure days are the heart of this tour. On the first, you abseil down a waterfall with trained instructors, hanging on a rope with water falling around you, then trek about one and a half kilometres to a chain of seven natural pools, where you can try a stream slide and a confidence jump into deep water. On the second, you raft the Kelani over roughly five kilometres of river, covering five major and four minor rapids after a full safety briefing, with helmets, life jackets and a guide in each boat. The rafting is open to anyone from the age of ten. Beach days and the Madu RiverAfter rafting you drive to Waskaduwa, a calm beach suburb near Kalutara, for two nights by the sea. A free day lets you visit the Madu River, where a boat winds through mangrove channels, and a turtle hatchery, before ending the afternoon on the sand. On the last morning your driver takes you to the airport for your flight. When to go and how to prepareThe river and the coast are friendliest between December and March, while the Cultural Triangle and the elephant park are better from April to October. Rafting can run in many months, but heavy rain affects river conditions, so we watch the forecast and adjust. Bring quick-drying clothes, sports sandals with straps, a swimsuit, a change of clothes and a towel, plus sunscreen. You travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking driver-guide. Making it your ownEvery Volata Travels itinerary can be changed. If you would like a second abseil, an extra beach night or a day trip to the elephant orphanage, tell us and we will adjust the route and send a quote. Tour highlights
Day-by-day itinerary![]() Your Volata Travels driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name board and takes you to Colombo, a drive of roughly an hour. The capital is a gentle place to begin: by the time you check in you have probably seen enough of the coast road to know you have arrived in the tropics. If you feel fresh, your driver-guide can show you some of the city before dinner, perhaps the Galle Face Green seafront, the Fort district and the old bazaar streets of Pettah. If you are tired, skip it entirely and go to bed early, because the road trip starts in the morning and the days ahead are active. ![]() After breakfast you leave Colombo and head inland across the island, a drive of about four hours to reach Dambulla. The road passes through coconut country, then paddy and forest, and your driver-guide will stop for a break wherever you need one. The cave temple at Dambulla is the first sight of the Cultural Triangle. A staircase leads up the rock to a row of five caves tucked beneath an immense overhang, which rises roughly 160 metres above the plain. Inside you find 153 Buddha statues, figures of three kings and four deities, with painted ceilings covering the walls. People have worshipped here for more than two thousand years, and UNESCO listed the complex in 1991. Take off your shoes at the entrance, cover your shoulders and knees, and allow around an hour. After a late lunch and a short rest, you head out for an open jeep safari in the afternoon at Minneriya. The park is centred on an old reservoir, and as the dry season advances the water pulls back and fresh grass appears on the shore. Elephants come in from the forest to feed, sometimes in herds of dozens or more, which is the event known as the Gathering. Timing depends on the season, so your guide will tell you what to expect, and the best months are roughly July to October. Even outside that period you have a good chance of seeing elephants along with deer, buffalo, monkeys and water birds. Jeep and entrance fees are paid separately. You finish the day in Habarana, a village surrounded by forest and lakes. You can dine at your hotel restaurant or ask your driver-guide for a place nearby, and the sounds of frogs and insects keep you company as you fall asleep. ![]() Today starts early, because Sigiriya is best before the heat. Habarana is only about twenty-five minutes from the fortress, so you are at the gate soon after breakfast. This was the palace-and-garden complex that King Kashyapa built in the fifth century, and it is now one of the island's most visited places. Your path leads through terraced water gardens, then up to the Mirror Wall and the Lion's Paws gateway, then along a gallery that holds the painted celestial maidens. Roughly 1,200 steps take you to the summit ruins, with the jungle spread out in every direction. The climb takes around three hours in total and is the most demanding sightseeing of the cultural days, so bring water and a hat. Later you drive on to Kandy, about two and a half to three hours away, climbing from the dry lowlands into green hills. The air cools noticeably, and tea gardens and small markets line the winding road. In the late afternoon the day turns active again with a guided walk of about three hours through farmland on the edge of Kandy. A local guide leads you along footpaths between paddy terraces, vegetable plots, spice trees and village houses, explaining how people grow and cook their food. Wear shoes with grip, because paths can be slippery after rain. Most of the walk is easy, with a few gentle slopes. Back in town you check in at your hotel, shower, and settle in for the evening. If you still have energy, take a stroll by the lake. Tomorrow you head to the rainforest. Meals Breakfast Accommodation Devon Hotel, Kandy or similar Included Activities

![]() After breakfast you leave Kandy and drive west for about two hours to Kitulgala, a rainforest town on the Kelani river. The road drops through green hills and rubber estates, and the humidity rises as you enter the forest. Kitulgala is the island's capital of outdoor sport, offering rafting, canyoning, jungle walks and bird watching, and parts of a famous 1950s war film were shot on the river banks. The first adventure is abseiling down a waterfall. Instructors fit your harness and helmet, explain the signals and check every knot before you step backwards over the edge. Then you walk the rope down the rock face while water pours around you. It is thrilling rather than frightening, since the team controls your descent, and most people want to go again. If you prefer to watch, the viewing spot is good, and no one pushes you to do anything. After lunch comes a trek of about one and a half kilometres along the Kataran Oya, a forest stream, to a series of natural rock pools and small waterfalls. There are seven pools, each a little different, and you can swim, slide down a smooth stretch of rock and, if you dare, take a confidence jump into deep water. Footing is uneven and wet, so wear sports sandals or trainers with a good grip and bring a change of clothes. Back at your hotel you can shower and rest, and a quiet evening in the forest is a good way to recover. Listen for birds at dusk and keep a torch handy if you walk about after dark. ![]() Today is the big water day. After breakfast you meet your rafting team at the river, collect your helmet and life jacket, and receive a thorough safety briefing. The instructors teach paddle commands, show what to do if you fall in and match the boats to the group. Rafting is open to anyone from the age of ten, and previous experience is not needed. Then you set off. The route runs for about five kilometres down the Kelani, and you pass through five major and four minor rapids, with calm stretches in between where you can float, look at the forest and spot kingfishers or monitor lizards on the banks. The rapids are exciting but manageable, and the river is lined with rainforest, rocks and the occasional village. A guide sits in each boat to steer and keep everyone safe. Wear a swimsuit, quick-drying shorts or leggings and strapped sandals, and pack a towel and dry clothes for later. Water levels vary with the weather, and the team may adjust the route if the river is too high. After the run you shower and eat lunch. Then you drive to the coast, a journey of about two and a half hours, leaving the rainforest for the flat, palm-fringed south-west. The beach suburb of Waskaduwa lies just north of Kalutara and offers a long strip of sand and a handful of seafront hotels. You arrive in time to walk on the beach and watch the sun go down over the Indian Ocean. After the past two days it is easy to relax, and sore arms are a good excuse to order a cold drink and do nothing. ![]() A slow morning at the hotel is the best start to today. After breakfast, your driver-guide takes you on a half-day outing to the Madu River, a wetland of mangrove channels and small islands that has been a protected sanctuary since 2006. Around sixty-four islands are scattered across the estuary, and some are inhabited. A boatman steers you along narrow waterways beneath arching roots, past fishing nets, birds and sometimes a monitor lizard. Stops along the way usually include a cinnamon-peeling demonstration, a small temple on an island and a fish-spa platform where tiny fish nibble at your feet, which tickles more than it hurts. From the river you can visit a turtle hatchery along the coast near Kosgoda. Sea turtles come ashore here to lay eggs, and the hatchery protects the nests, looks after injured animals and releases young turtles into the sea. You can see tanks with turtles of different ages and learn why so many are endangered. Be gentle, do not touch the hatchlings, and consider leaving a small donation if you can. By early afternoon you are back at Waskaduwa and the rest of the day is free. Swim in the sea if the waves are mild, read on the sand or lie by the pool. Waskaduwa is a quiet corner of the coast with few crowds, so the pace is easy. If you would like a massage after rafting and abseiling, your hotel can arrange one. You can dine at your hotel restaurant or at a place nearby, and enjoy a final evening by the water before the flight home. Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need experience for the rafting and abseiling?
No. Instructors give a full briefing, fit your helmet, harness and life jacket and stay with you throughout. Rafting is open to anyone from the age of ten who is comfortable in water, and abseiling is done on a controlled rope. You should be reasonably fit and able to follow instructions. If you have a back, heart or joint condition, mention it before the tour.
How difficult are the rapids on the Kelani river?
The run covers about five kilometres with five major and four minor rapids, which is a lively but beginner-friendly stretch. Water levels vary with rainfall, so the team checks conditions on the day and can shorten or change the route if the river is too high. Calm sections between rapids give you time to rest and look around.
Will I definitely see elephants at Minneriya?
Elephants are often seen there, but wildlife is never certain. The famous Gathering is at its best in the dry season, roughly July to October, when herds come to the reservoir shore. At other times you may see fewer animals, though deer, buffalo and birds are common. The jeep safari is a late-afternoon drive, which gives the best light.
What is the best time of year for this tour?
December to March suits the river and the south-west coast best, while the Cultural Triangle and Minneriya are better from April to October. Rafting is possible in many months, but heavy rain can affect conditions. If you tell us your travel dates, we can advise which parts of the route are likely to be at their best.
How long are the drives?
Colombo to Dambulla takes about four hours, Habarana to Sigiriya roughly twenty-five minutes and Sigiriya to Kandy two and a half to three hours. Kandy to Kitulgala is around two hours, and Kitulgala to Waskaduwa about two and a half. The last drive from the coast to the airport is roughly an hour and a half.
What should I pack for the adventure days?
Bring a swimsuit, quick-drying shorts or leggings, a rash vest if you like one, strapped sandals or old trainers, a towel and a full change of clothes. Add sunscreen, a hat, insect repellent and a waterproof bag for your phone. Temple visits need covered shoulders and knees, so pack one set of lightweight long clothing.
Is this tour suitable for families?
It works well for families with children aged ten and older, because that is the minimum age for rafting. Younger children can enjoy the elephants, caves, village walk and beach days, but the rafting would need to be skipped or replaced. Tell us your children's ages and we can adjust the activities.
Are the activities and entrance fees included?
The abseiling, rock-pool trek and rafting are part of the programme and are arranged for you. Temple and site entrance fees and the Minneriya jeep and park charges are paid separately on the day. Breakfast is included every day at the hotel, while lunch, dinner and drinks are paid by the guest. Your driver-guide can explain costs in advance.
Can I add more beach time or change the route?
Yes. Every Volata Travels tour is private and can be adjusted. You could add a night at the beach, swap Colombo for a night in Negombo, include the Pinnawala elephant orphanage or extend the Cultural Triangle section. Send us your preferences and travel dates, and we will rework the plan and send a quote.

Is the price the same on 24 and 31 December?
Not quite. Hotels charge a compulsory supplement for the nights of 24 December (Christmas Eve) and 31 December (New Year's Eve), and these supplements are not included in the tour price. If your dates include either night, tell us when you enquire and we will confirm the supplement for the hotels on your route before you book.
Can I customize this tour?
Yes. The order of stops, the number of nights in each place, the hotels and the activities can all be adjusted to your dates, pace and budget — this is a private tour built around you, not a fixed group departure. Tell us what you would like to change and we will send a revised quote.
