Private Tour · 3★ & 2★ hotels 4 Days Sri Lanka Tour: Kandy, Peradeniya & Bentota BeachFour days that balance culture and sand: Pinnawala, Kandy and the Peradeniya gardens, two nights at Bentota, then a Colombo city tour before you fly. Private Tour · 3★ & 2★ hotelsEasy intensityEnglish-speaking guide Tour priceFromUSD 313per person A 4 day Sri Lanka tour with Kandy and Bentota suits travellers who want hills, culture and a proper stretch of beach without changing hotel every night. You sleep once in the hill capital and twice on the south-west coast, and in between you meet orphaned elephants, wander through a botanic garden with royal roots and glide into the mangroves by boat. It works as a first look at the island, as a stopover that deserves more than an airport hotel, or as a compact break when time is short. Who the 4 day Sri Lanka tour with Kandy and Bentota suitsCouples, families with school-age children and small groups of friends will all find the pace comfortable. Nothing here is a trek. You walk through gardens, climb a few temple steps and step in and out of a boat, and the rest of the time you sit in a cool car with a window seat. The two longest drives are the climb from the coast to Kandy and the descent back down again, and both are broken up with stops so the hours pass easily. The route, hotels and your driver-guideYou are collected in Colombo on the first morning, or at the airport if you have just landed, and head inland towards Kandy, which lies roughly three to three and a half hours from the capital. Pinnawala sits about an hour and a half along that road, so it fills the first part of the day naturally. Night one is in Kandy, then you spend two nights at Bentota, with breakfast included at your hotels and lunch and dinner left to you, so you can eat where you like. The last morning follows the coast road north to Colombo for a city tour before your flight. One English-speaking driver-guide and one air-conditioned vehicle stay with you for the whole trip, so you can ask questions, change a stop or simply ask for a coffee break. Elephants, a sacred relic and a dance showPinnawala began in 1975 on a coconut estate beside the Maha Oya river. The idea was simple: give a safe home to calves found orphaned or hurt in the forest. Keepers still feed the youngest from bottles, and twice a day the whole herd is led down to the water. Kandy follows in the afternoon. This old royal city wraps around a small lake, and its holiest building keeps a relic said to be a tooth of the Buddha, carried to the island in the fourth century inside a princess's hair. Pilgrims arrive with lotus flowers, drums beat, and you are welcome to stand quietly at the back. After dark, a Kandyan show fills a hall with drummers, acrobatic dancers, magicians and fire. Peradeniya gardens, spices and teaDay two is the green day. The Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya curl around a bend of the Mahaweli river, a few kilometres from Kandy, and more than four thousand kinds of plants grow among their lawns, orchid houses and avenues of enormous trees. A spice garden then shows pepper, cardamom, cloves and cinnamon on the plant and explains which of them are used in Ayurvedic remedies. At a tea estate you follow the leaf from bush to cup, and learn why these hills made Ceylon tea famous. Then the road drops towards the sea. Bentota beach and the Madu RiverBentota is where the trip slows down. The beach is wide, the river mouth is calm, and the town has a long tradition of Ayurveda treatments, so you can swim, read, book a massage or ask about kayaking and other water activities. In the late afternoon you take a boat on the Madu River, a wetland of mangrove islands and quiet channels. Typical stops include a cinnamon-peeling demonstration, a temple island, a fish spa where tiny fish nibble at your feet, and a turtle hatchery that releases hatchlings at dusk. On the last day you drive to Colombo for a relaxed city tour that blends colonial landmarks, seafront lawns, places of worship and shopping time. Best time for this tourKandy, Bentota and Colombo are driest from roughly December to March, and April is often still pleasant, so that is the easiest window for a beach-and-hills combination. In the other months you can expect some showers, often in the afternoon, and rougher water at the shore, but the gardens, the temple and the river cruise all remain enjoyable. Kandy is warm by day and cooler in the evening, so pack a light layer, and bring a hat and sun cream for the beach. Make it your ownFour days is a sample rather than a deep dive, and many guests ask us to stretch it. You might add a night in Kandy, keep a third night at the coast or begin with a quiet night near the airport after a long flight. The city tour on the last day is easiest with an afternoon or evening departure, so send us your flight time when you enquire and we will build the plan around it. Dates, hotels and stops can all be adjusted, and your driver-guide can suggest changes on the road as well. Tour highlights
Day-by-day itinerary![]() Your driver-guide collects you in Colombo, or in the arrivals hall if you have just landed, and the road heads inland through coconut country and then into low green hills. The first stop is Pinnawala, about an hour and a half from the capital, so you arrive with a good part of the day still ahead of you. Dress for sun and mud, because the riverbank can be churned up. The orphanage was opened in 1975 by the Wildlife Department on a coconut estate of about 25 acres beside the Maha Oya river. It was created to look after elephants found orphaned in the forests, and the idea is to give them a life as close to natural as a managed place can offer. The exceptions are the twice-daily bath, when the herd is walked down to the river, and the feeding of calves under three years old, who still drink milk from bottles. Seeing the feeding first and the bath afterwards makes for a lovely rhythm. Plan on a couple of hours here. Back in the car, the road climbs to Kandy, which you reach in the afternoon after roughly three hours of total driving from Colombo. Once you have settled into your hotel, you walk to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. Tradition says the relic reached the island in the fourth century, hidden in the hair of a princess from Orissa, and its fame has only grown since. Cover your shoulders and knees, and leave your shoes at the entrance. Drums, flowers and chanting give the place a quiet intensity. In the evening you attend a Kandyan dance show, with drummers, acrobatic dancers, magicians and fire performances. Dinner is your choice, at the hotel or at a restaurant in town, and then you sleep in the hills, where the air is a little cooler. Accommodation Devon Hotel, Kandy or similar Included Activities

![]() After breakfast you leave your hotel for the green side of Kandy. The first stop is the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya, about five kilometres west of the town. The grounds spread over roughly 147 acres inside a loop of the Mahaweli river, at around 460 metres above sea level. Kings held court nearby as early as 1371, and the formal gardens took shape in the early 1800s under Alexander Moon. In the Second World War they even served as an Allied headquarters for Asia. Today you find orchids, palms, medicinal plants, spice trees and long avenues lined with giant trunks. Allow a leisurely walk, wear a hat and bring water. Next comes a spice garden, where the guides pass around leaves, bark and seeds for you to rub and smell. You see how pepper, cardamom, cloves, vanilla and cinnamon are grown, and hear how the same plants appear in Ayurvedic oils and remedies. Small bottles of balm and spice packets are on sale, but there is no pressure. The third visit is a tea estate and factory. Planters from Britain found that the damp, cool slopes around Kandy suited tea, and the very first plant from China was grown at Peradeniya before the crop spread to Hatton and Bandarawela. Inside the factory the leaf is withered, rolled, dried and sorted into grades, and the day ends with a fresh cup beside the terraces. Ask for a plain cup first to taste the leaf itself. After lunch the drive down to the coast begins. This is the longest drive of the tour, so the plan is to settle back, enjoy the changing scenery from hills to palm-lined lowlands and arrive at Bentota in the evening. For dinner, choose the hotel restaurant or a seafood place nearby, with the sound of surf close by. Meals Breakfast Accommodation Laluna Ayurveda Resort or similar Included Activities

![]() Today the diary is light, which is the point. After a slow breakfast you can explore Bentota at your own speed, and your driver-guide is on hand to drive you around the area. The beach is wide and good for long walks, and the river mouth gives calmer water for kayaking, banana-boat rides and jet-skis. These are optional extras, paid for on the spot. Bentota is also known for Ayurveda, so a massage or herbal treatment at your hotel is an easy way to spend the late morning. If you prefer gardens, ask about the lush grounds created by the Bawa brothers nearby. Around the end of the afternoon, you travel to the Madu River. The wetland covers roughly 915 hectares and holds about 64 islands, some of them lived on, all fed by seven tributaries. It has been a protected sanctuary since 2006. A boatman steers you along narrow channels beneath the mangrove roots. Along the way you pause at a cinnamon-peeling demonstration, a small island temple and a fish-spa platform, where tiny fish nibble at your feet and tickle. The last stop is a turtle hatchery along the coast at Kosgoda. Five species of sea turtle nest on these beaches. The hatchery buries the eggs in safe sand, treats injured turtles, and lets the hatchlings go into the sea when the light fades. What you see depends on the day, but it is always a gentle, educational visit and children tend to love it. You return to your hotel for a second night by the sea, with dinner wherever you prefer, in the hotel restaurant or at a beachside place. ![]() After breakfast you check out and follow the coast road north towards Colombo, about an hour and a half away,. The city tour is built around your flight time, and it works best when your departure is in the afternoon or evening. In the old Fort district you pass colonial buildings, among them the Old Parliament, and Independence Square with its memorial hall. Galle Face Green is the broad seaside lawn that makes a pleasant place to stretch your legs and watch the waves. Viharamahadevi Park and the city museum sit in the middle of town, and the twin towers of the World Trade Center stand out on the skyline. You also drive by Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Christian places of worship, which says a lot about the character of the capital. Entry to any museum is paid separately. There is a little time for shopping too, for tea, spices, batik or small gifts. Your driver-guide then takes you on to the airport, roughly an hour from Colombo, and drops you at departures with time to spare. Thank you for travelling with Volata Travels. Frequently Asked Questions
Is 4 days enough to see Kandy and Bentota?
It is enough for a good first impression if you accept two long driving days. Kandy gets one evening and one morning, which covers the temple, a dance show, the botanic gardens and tea. Bentota gets two nights, so you have a day for the beach and the Madu River. If you want a slower pace, add a night in Kandy or at the coast.
How long is the drive from Colombo to Kandy?
Colombo to Kandy takes roughly three to three and a half hours, and Pinnawala is about an hour and a half along that road, so the elephant stop breaks up the day. Traffic can slow things near towns, so your driver-guide sets the timing for the day and tells you when to expect to arrive.
What will we see at Peradeniya Royal Botanic Gardens?
The gardens lie roughly five kilometres from Kandy on a bend of the Mahaweli river. They are known for orchids, palms, spice plants and long avenues of huge trees, and more than four thousand species grow there. A slow walk takes a couple of hours, and shoes you can walk in are more useful than anything else.
Can we try water sports in Bentota?
Yes. The river mouth is calm and kayaks, banana boats and jet-skis are available locally. They are optional and paid for on the spot, not part of the package, and the free day is the best moment to try them. Your driver-guide can point you to a reliable operator, and the sea itself should be treated with care when the waves are up.
Is there a lot of walking on this tour?
No. The walking is gentle: a stroll through the botanic gardens, riverbank paths at Pinnawala, a few steps at the temple in Kandy, and a few steps into and out of the boat at the Madu River. There are no climbs or hikes, so the tour suits most fitness levels, including grandparents travelling with the family.
Which flight times suit the Colombo city tour?
An afternoon or evening departure suits the city tour best, because it leaves several relaxed hours in Colombo. If your flight leaves early in the morning, tell us when you book and we will shorten or skip the city tour and drive straight to the airport instead, or suggest a night near the airport.
Is this tour suitable for children?
Yes, it works well for families. Children usually enjoy the elephants at Pinnawala, the boat on the Madu River and the turtle hatchery, and the beach days give everyone a rest. The longest drives are the road to Kandy and the descent to the coast, so bring snacks, a tablet and a travel pillow. Let us know ages when you enquire.
When is the best time to take this tour?
Kandy and the south-west coast are driest from about December to March, and April is often good as well, so that is the easiest time for a combination of hills and beach. In other months you may meet rain, usually in short heavy bursts, and the sea can be rough. The programme works all year because most visits are flexible.
What's included in the 4-day tour price?
Meet and greet at Bandaranaike International Airport; 3 nights in 3-star and 2-star hotels (or similar), double or twin room sharing; a single room if you travel alone; Daily breakfast at your hotels (bed and breakfast); All transfers and sightseeing in a private air-conditioned vehicle; English-speaking driver-guide throughout the tour; Fuel, parking, driver accommodation and highway fees. The tour costs USD 313 per person when two adults share a room, or USD 607 for one traveller in a single room, for 3 nights / 4 days. These prices are valid for travel from 8 October 2026 to 30 November 2027.
What's not included?
International flights and the Sri Lanka ETA visa fee; Lunches, dinners and drinks (breakfast is included); Entrance fees and activity fees (Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and cultural show, Peradeniya Royal Botanic Gardens, Madu River boat ride, turtle hatchery); Optional tours and optional activities; Train tickets (if you choose the scenic train); Hotel supplements when you travel on 24 December and 31 December (New Year), and the Christmas supplement on 24 December; Tips, porterage and personal expenses; Early check-in and late check-out at hotels; Travel insurance and bank charges.
Is the price the same on 24 and 31 December?
Not quite. Hotels charge a compulsory supplement for the nights of 24 December (Christmas Eve) and 31 December (New Year's Eve), and these supplements are not included in the tour price. If your dates include either night, tell us when you enquire and we will confirm the supplement for the hotels on your route before you book.
Can I customize this tour?
Yes. The order of stops, the number of nights in each place, the hotels and the activities can all be adjusted to your dates, pace and budget — this is a private tour built around you, not a fixed group departure. Tell us what you would like to change and we will send a revised quote.
What is the cancellation policy?
All cancellations must be received in writing by your Volata Tour Consultant. Cancellations received up to 61 days before departure result in the loss of the deposit. Between 60 and 46 days before departure a charge of 25% of the tour price applies; between 45 and 29 days, 50%; between 28 and 15 days, 75%; and 14 days or less before departure the entire tour price is forfeited. Airline tickets follow the refund policy of each airline, and special event tickets follow the policy of each event.
