Private Tour · 3★ & 2★ hotels 2 Days Kandy Tour: Pinnawala Elephants, Temple & TeaTwo compact days from the airport: elephants at Pinnawala, the Sacred Tooth temple and a dance show in Kandy, then tea and gems before your airport transfer. Private Tour · 3★ & 2★ hotelsEasy intensityEnglish-speaking guide Tour priceFromUSD 173per person A 2 day Kandy tour from Colombo is the quickest way to meet the green heart of Sri Lanka. In just two days you travel from the airport to the hill capital, stopping on the way to watch rescued elephants bathe in a river. Once in Kandy you see the temple that holds the Buddha's tooth relic, enjoy an evening of drumming and dance, and next morning walk through a tea estate and visit a gem workshop before the road carries you back to the airport. A private driver-guide handles every transfer, so you never need to arrange transport. Who the 2 day Kandy tour from Colombo suitsThis trip suits people with little time: travellers on a stopover, guests who land in the morning and want to see something real before a beach week, and families who want a gentle introduction rather than a full circuit. It also works as a first chapter before a longer trip, since the route runs along the main road that most island itineraries follow. Nothing here is strenuous. You will do a few short walks, climb a handful of temple steps and sit in the car for the longer stretches. Children enjoy the elephants and the dance show, and older travellers appreciate the unhurried pace and the private vehicle. The route from airport to KandyYour driver meets you in the arrivals hall and sets off towards the hills. The road from the airport to Kandy takes about three hours without stops, and the first major break is Pinnawala, roughly an hour and a half from Colombo. After about two hours with the elephants you continue upwards, passing coconut groves, rubber trees and roadside fruit stalls until the land begins to fold into ridges. Kandy appears around a small lake, with the roofs of the temple beside the water. That evening you attend a dance performance, visit the temple while the drums are playing and then choose a place for dinner, either at your hotel or in town. Highlights of the Pinnawala and Kandy tourThe orphanage at Pinnawala was founded in 1975 beside the Maha Oya river, and it cares for elephants that were found orphaned or hurt. The most absorbing part of the visit is the herd's trip to the water: the animals pad down a lane to the river, wade in and spend a long time spraying, rolling and playing. Smaller calves, those under three, are still fed milk from bottles. It is a lively scene, and children rarely want to leave. Kandy's great attraction is the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. The relic is said to have arrived in the fourth century, carried in the hair of a princess from Orissa, and over the centuries it became the most revered possession of the island. Drummers and worshippers fill the courtyard at ritual times, and the atmosphere is moving even if you are not a Buddhist. Later, the cultural show brings dancers in elaborate costume, acrobats and fire acts to the stage. Day two: tea, gems and the airport runThe second morning is about two local industries. First you visit a tea estate to see how the leaf grows and how it is processed, finishing with a tasting of freshly made Ceylon tea. The central hills were converted to tea during British rule, and the first plant is said to have come from China to the botanical gardens at Peradeniya. Then you visit a gem gallery, where a mine reconstruction and a film explain how sapphires and other stones are found, cut and set, with no obligation to buy. There is also free time for shopping in Kandy before the drive to the airport. Practical details and comfortYour vehicle is private and air-conditioned, and your driver-guide speaks English and explains the sights as you go. A hotel in Kandy is included for one night on a bed-and-breakfast plan, so breakfast is included and you choose where to have lunch and dinner; your driver-guide is happy to suggest good local restaurants. Entrance fees are paid separately. Dress modestly for the temple, with shoulders and knees covered, and carry a light jacket, since Kandy's evenings can be cool. Comfortable shoes help on wet ground at Pinnawala. When to go and how to extendKandy and the hills are driest from about December to March and remain pleasant into April, but the city is rewarding all year, and a shower does not stop the elephants bathing. If you have more time, the same route continues naturally to Sigiriya, Nuwara Eliya and the south. Tell us your dates, and we can add nights, move the finish to Colombo or the airport, or build a longer tour around these two days. Tour highlights
Day-by-day itinerary![]() Your driver-guide meets you in the arrivals hall, and after a short settling-in you leave the coastal plain behind. The road to Kandy takes about three hours without stops, but the first and best break comes at Pinnawala, roughly an hour and a half from Colombo. Plan to arrive in the morning if you can, since the elephants are most active near the river then. The orphanage opened in 1975 on a coconut estate beside the Maha Oya river. It cares for elephants found without their mothers or hurt in the forest, and the idea is to give them life as close to the wild as possible. Calves under three are still fed by hand from big bottles, and twice a day the herd walks down to the river. Take a seat on the bank or on a terrace above it and watch them wade in, splash and roll, with the smallest ones sticking close to the adults. Allow about two hours, and keep your camera strap tight, since the ground is wet and slippery. The road then climbs into the hills, and you reach Kandy in the afternoon. The old royal capital is arranged around a lake, and UNESCO lists the whole city. After checking in, you attend an hour-long cultural show in the early evening, when drummers, dancers in plumed costumes and fire performers fill the stage. You then walk to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. According to tradition the relic reached the island in the fourth century, smuggled in a princess's hair, and it is still honoured above everything else in the country. Drums and conch shells sound at ritual times, and pilgrims bring flowers. Remove your shoes, cover your knees and shoulders, and keep your voice low. Dinner is your choice afterwards: the hotel restaurant is convenient after the show, and your driver-guide can suggest a good place in town if you prefer. ![]() After breakfast you drive out of the city into the tea slopes for a plantation visit. Here you learn how the bushes are plucked and how fresh leaf is turned into black tea: withering, rolling, fermenting, drying and grading. The story of Ceylon tea began with British planters, and the first plant is said to have come from China and been planted in the botanical gardens at Peradeniya, before the crop spread to Hatton and Bandarawela. The visit ends with a cup of freshly made tea and a quiet look across the terraces. Next you visit a gem gallery in Kandy, where a mock mine and a short film show how Sri Lanka's stones are found, cut and mounted in gold or silver. You may browse, ask questions and leave without buying. A slot of free time follows for shopping in town, for handicrafts, spices or a last stroll by the lake. The tour ends with the transfer to Bandaranaike airport, about three hours from Kandy without stops, so it works best to leave the city by late morning if your flight is in the evening. Tell us your flight time and we will plan the day around it. We can also end the tour in Colombo, or at a beach hotel on the coast, if you prefer. Meals Breakfast Included Activities

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 2 days enough to see Kandy?
It is enough for the essentials: the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, a dance show, a tea estate and a gem gallery, plus the elephants at Pinnawala on the way. You will not see the botanical gardens or the lake in depth, so if you want a slower visit, ask us to add a night and a morning at Peradeniya.
How long is the drive from the airport to Kandy?
About three hours without stops, and Pinnawala sits roughly an hour and a half from Colombo, so the elephant visit breaks the journey neatly. With two hours at the orphanage, you should reach Kandy by mid or late afternoon, in good time for the evening dance show and the temple.
What time of day is best for the elephants at Pinnawala?
The herd is taken to the river twice a day, and the bathing is the part most people enjoy. Your driver will plan the arrival around those times, so you can also watch the calves being fed. Arriving in the morning usually works well, and it avoids the hottest part of the day.
What should I wear at the Temple of the Tooth?
Cover your shoulders and knees, and wear something that is easy to slip off at the entrance, because shoes and hats are removed. A light scarf is helpful. The temple can be crowded at ritual times, so allow a little patience, and keep your voice low and your camera respectful.
Is the tour suitable for children?
Yes. Children usually love the elephants and the fire acts in the dance show, and the walking is short. The days are fairly long in the car, so bring snacks and something to read. The cultural show is an hour, which most children manage well, and our driver can adjust the schedule.
Do I have to buy anything at the gem gallery?
No. The visit is an informative stop, and you are free to look, ask questions and leave. If you do decide to buy, ask for a proper receipt and take your time, since a good dealer will be comfortable with that. Your driver-guide can explain what to look for. Buying is entirely your choice.
Can the tour end in Colombo or at the airport?
Yes. The standard plan finishes with the transfer to the airport, but we can end in Colombo or at a beach hotel on the coast instead. Kandy to Colombo takes roughly three to three and a half hours, so tell us your flight time and we will build in a safe margin.
When is the best time to do this tour?
Kandy and the hills are driest from about December to March and stay pleasant into April, but the city is attractive in any month. Rain is more common in the middle of the year, and showers rarely stop the programme. Pack a light rain jacket and an umbrella just in case.
What's included in the 2-day tour price?
Meet and greet at Bandaranaike International Airport; 1 nights in 3-star and 2-star hotels (or similar), double or twin room sharing; a single room if you travel alone; Daily breakfast at your hotels (bed and breakfast); All transfers and sightseeing in a private air-conditioned vehicle; English-speaking driver-guide throughout the tour; Fuel, parking, driver accommodation and highway fees. The tour costs USD 173 per person when two adults share a room, or USD 340 for one traveller in a single room, for 1 nights / 2 days. These prices are valid for travel from 8 October 2026 to 30 November 2027.
What's not included?
International flights and the Sri Lanka ETA visa fee; Lunches, dinners and drinks (breakfast is included); Entrance fees and activity fees (Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and cultural show); Optional tours and optional activities; Train tickets (if you choose the scenic train); Hotel supplements when you travel on 24 December and 31 December (New Year), and the Christmas supplement on 24 December; Tips, porterage and personal expenses; Early check-in and late check-out at hotels; Travel insurance and bank charges.
Is the price the same on 24 and 31 December?
Not quite. Hotels charge a compulsory supplement for the nights of 24 December (Christmas Eve) and 31 December (New Year's Eve), and these supplements are not included in the tour price. If your dates include either night, tell us when you enquire and we will confirm the supplement for the hotels on your route before you book.
Can I customize this tour?
Yes. The order of stops, the number of nights in each place, the hotels and the activities can all be adjusted to your dates, pace and budget — this is a private tour built around you, not a fixed group departure. Tell us what you would like to change and we will send a revised quote.
What is the cancellation policy?
All cancellations must be received in writing by your Volata Tour Consultant. Cancellations received up to 61 days before departure result in the loss of the deposit. Between 60 and 46 days before departure a charge of 25% of the tour price applies; between 45 and 29 days, 50%; between 28 and 15 days, 75%; and 14 days or less before departure the entire tour price is forfeited. Airline tickets follow the refund policy of each airline, and special event tickets follow the policy of each event.
