Private Tour · 3★ & 2★ hotels Kandy & Bentota BeachFour days that pair the hill capital with the south-west coast: elephants, the Tooth Relic temple, a botanic garden, tea and spices, then a night by the sea. Private Tour · 3★ & 2★ hotelsEasy intensityEnglish-speaking guide Tour priceFromUSD 304per person A Kandy to Bentota hills and beach tour is built for travellers who want to see both halves of Sri Lanka's character in just four days: the cool, temple-studded hills of the old royal capital and the palm-fringed sand of the south-west coast. You spend two nights in Kandy, one night by the sea at Bentota, and finish with a short city tour in Colombo before your flight. Elephants, gems, gardens, tea and spices are woven in along the way. Who the Kandy to Bentota hills and beach tour suitsThe route is made for first-time visitors with limited time, for couples who want culture and a beach in one trip, and for families with children who enjoy variety. It also works well as a stopover, because the programme starts at the airport and ends there. The effort level is low. You walk through gardens and factory floors, climb a few temple steps and spend the long driving hours in an air-conditioned vehicle with a window seat. What makes this version different is its balance. A shorter Kandy break stays in the hills, while longer routes add Sigiriya, Nuwara Eliya or a multi-night beach stay. This one lets you taste the coast for an evening and a morning without turning the trip into a marathon. If the sea wins you over, it is easy to add nights in Bentota. From Pinnawala to the Kandy hillsYou are collected from the airport and drive towards Kandy, about three hours away. The elephant orphanage at Pinnawala is the first stop, around ninety minutes from Colombo. By late afternoon you reach Kandy, where you visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and watch a Kandyan dance performance. The next day is spent entirely around Kandy, with a gem museum and the botanic gardens at Peradeniya. Tea, spices and the road to the seaDay three is the long one, and it is packed with things worth stopping for. A short morning return to the Peradeniya gardens is followed by a working tea estate and factory, where you follow the leaf from plucking through withering, rolling, fermenting, drying and grading before tasting a fresh cup. A spice garden lies on the way down, with cardamom, pepper, cinnamon and cloves growing in front of you and herbal Ayurvedic remedies explained. Then the road descends to Bentota, a town at the mouth of a river, with wide sand and plenty of room to stretch your legs. Bentota, Colombo and your departureYour evening in Bentota is unhurried. Walk the beach at sunset, try the river for kayaking or a banana-boat ride if you feel like it, or book an Ayurvedic massage. Water sports and spa treatments are optional and paid for on the spot. The final morning follows the coast road about an hour and a half north to Colombo, where a city tour takes in the Fort district, Galle Face Green and a mix of temples, churches, a mosque and markets before you are driven to the airport for your flight. Comfort, meals and your driver-guideOne driver-guide looks after you from the first greeting to the final drop-off. Your guide speaks English, knows the roads, and drives a cool, spacious car that is yours alone for the four days. Your rooms are in comfortable three-star and two-star hotels, and breakfast comes with each night. For other meals you decide where to eat, with ideas from your guide whenever you ask. Tickets, activity charges and optional extras are paid as you go. When to travelKandy and the south-west coast share a wet and dry pattern. The driest, sunniest months for both are roughly December to March, and the weather often stays good into April. Between May and October the south-west monsoon brings heavier rain and rougher seas to the coast, though the hills still offer plenty of dry hours and the greener scenery has its own appeal. Make it your ownTell us your dates, your flight times and any interests, and we will tailor the outline. You might add a second beach night, replace the Colombo tour with extra time by the sea, or extend into the hills and the Cultural Triangle. Tour highlights
Day-by-day itinerary![]() Your driver-guide is waiting in the arrivals hall after your morning landing, and the tour begins straight away. Kandy lies about three hours from the airport by road, but you do not drive it in one go. Pinnawala sits around ninety minutes from Colombo on the same route, which makes it an ideal first stop after a night in the air. The elephant orphanage was set up in 1975 by the Wildlife Department in a coconut grove along the Maha Oya river, and it now cares for more elephants than any other centre on the island. The animals that arrive are orphans or injured, and the staff try to keep life as natural as possible, apart from two exceptions: the herd goes to the river for a bath twice a day, and the youngest calves, under three years, still take their milk from bottles held by mahouts and volunteers. Wear shoes that can handle a little mud, carry a hat and give the animals space. Beyond Pinnawala the road winds up into the hills and delivers you to Kandy in the afternoon. After checking in you walk to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, which stands by the lake in what was once the royal palace precinct. The relic is said to have reached Sri Lanka in the fourth century and is guarded as the island's most sacred object. Dress modestly and remove your shoes. A Kandyan cultural show follows at five, running for about an hour with drummers, dancers and fire-walkers. Dinner is your own choice. Accommodation Devon Hotel, Kandy or similar Included Activities

![]() Breakfast at your hotel, then a day that stays close to Kandy with no long transfers. The first visit is a gem museum and workshop, a good place to learn why Sri Lanka has been associated with precious stones since ancient times. Displays show uncut and polished sapphires and other gems, a replica of a mine shaft lets you see how miners worked, and a short film follows the stones from digging to setting in gold, silver or platinum. There is a showroom, but nobody pressures you to buy. After the museum, take a break. The rest of the late morning and early afternoon can be spent walking around the lake, browsing Kandy's central market or simply resting at the hotel. Your driver-guide will point you towards a good lunch spot if you ask. As the afternoon cools you drive to Peradeniya, about five kilometres west of the centre. The Royal Botanic Gardens lie on a bend of the Mahaweli river and cover some 147 acres at roughly 460 metres above sea level. They were a royal pleasure ground long before the British arrived, and later the grounds became one of the great botanical gardens of the empire. More than 4,000 plant species grow here. Make time for the orchid collection, the spice section and the long avenues of towering trees and palms, then sit on a lawn and watch the light change. Evening is free, and you sleep in Kandy again. ![]() Today you leave the hills, so breakfast is a little earlier than usual. Before the long descent, the programme returns briefly to the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya. Mornings are cooler and quieter, which suits the shaded palm collection and the spice section you may not have reached yesterday. From there you drive to a tea estate in the hills. Ceylon tea is the island's most important crop, and the central province is where it took hold. Planters in the colonial period found the cool, damp slopes ideal. On the guided factory tour, you see the leaf go through withering, rolling, oxidising, drying and grading, learn how quickly fresh leaves become tea, and finish with a tasting on the terrace. If you like, buy a packet for home. Further down the road, a spice garden is the next stop. Here the plants are labelled and demonstrated: cinnamon bark, cloves, pepper vines, cardamom pods and vanilla orchids, along with herbs that go into Ayurvedic treatments. Expect a short talk and a chance to sample oils and balms, with no pressure to purchase. Then comes the longest drive of the tour, as the road drops from the hills to the coast. Leave time for stops to stretch your legs. By late afternoon you reach Bentota, a beach town at the mouth of a river, and check in at your hotel. The evening is for sand, sunset and an easy dinner of your own choosing. Meals Breakfast Accommodation Laluna Ayurveda Resort or similar Included Activities

![]() After a final seaside breakfast you drive north along the coast road to Colombo, about an hour and a half from Bentota. The city tour is a relaxed way to end the trip, and it is shaped around your flight time. You pass the colonial buildings of the Fort district and the Old Parliament, then stop at Independence Square and its memorial hall. Galle Face Green is the long ocean-front lawn where families fly kites in the evenings. The Viharamahadevi Park is a leafy refuge in the middle of town, the city's museum holds the island's historical treasures, and the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center make a modern counterpoint. Along the way you see Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim and Christian places of worship, and there is time for shopping if you wish. Your driver-guide then takes you to Bandaranaike airport, about an hour from the city, in good time for your evening departure. Meals Breakfast Included Activities

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 4 days enough for Kandy and Bentota?
Four days works as a compact introduction. You get two nights in the hills, one night on the coast, and the main sights of Pinnawala, Kandy and Peradeniya, plus a taste of Bentota. It will not replace a longer holiday. If you want more beach time, we can add nights in Bentota or another coastal town.
How long is the drive from Kandy to Bentota?
It is the longest drive of the tour and takes most of the day, so we break it with a tea estate and a spice garden. Expect several hours on the road, with traffic around Colombo affecting the time. Your driver-guide leaves Kandy in the morning so you reach the coast in time to enjoy the beach before sunset.
What can I do in Bentota in the evening?
Most guests walk along the wide beach at sunset and have dinner at a nearby restaurant. In the calmer river water you can try kayaking, banana-boat rides or jet-skiing, and Ayurvedic massages are popular. These are optional and paid for locally. Swimming in the sea depends on the season and the currents, so ask your driver-guide or hotel about conditions.
Is this tour suitable for young children?
Yes, as long as they can sit through the longer drives. Elephants, sandy beach time and the dance show tend to delight children. Walking distances are short and mostly flat. Day three involves the most driving, so bring games and snacks. The pace can be adjusted to a family's needs.
What should I wear for the temples and tea estate?
At the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, cover your knees and shoulders and be ready to take off your shoes. In the botanic gardens and tea factory, light clothes, a hat and comfortable shoes are best. Evenings in Kandy are pleasantly cool, so a thin layer is useful, and a rain jacket is a good idea in any season.
When is the best time to go?
The driest period for both Kandy and the Bentota coast is roughly December to March, and the weather often holds into April. From May to October the south-west coast gets monsoon rain, rougher seas and fewer beach days, though the tour still runs and the hills stay green. Check conditions for swimming if the sea matters most to you.
Can I swim at Bentota?
Yes, the beach is wide and popular, but sea conditions vary with the monsoon. The calmest swimming is usually in the drier months, roughly December to March. The nearby river mouth offers calmer water for kayaking. Always follow local advice about currents, and swim where other people are in the water.
Are meals and entrance fees included?
Breakfast is included at your hotels each morning. Lunch and dinner are your own choice, and your driver-guide can suggest places en route. Entrance fees for sites like the temple, the botanic gardens and the gem museum, as well as optional activities such as water sports and spa treatments, are paid separately.
What's included in the 4-day tour price?
Meet and greet at Bandaranaike International Airport; 3 nights in 3-star and 2-star hotels (or similar), double or twin room sharing; a single room if you travel alone; Daily breakfast at your hotels (bed and breakfast); All transfers and sightseeing in a private air-conditioned vehicle; English-speaking driver-guide throughout the tour; Fuel, parking, driver accommodation and highway fees. The tour costs USD 304 per person when two adults share a room, or USD 588 for one traveller in a single room, for 3 nights / 4 days. These prices are valid for travel from 8 October 2026 to 30 November 2027.
What's not included?
International flights and the Sri Lanka ETA visa fee; Lunches, dinners and drinks (breakfast is included); Entrance fees and activity fees (Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and cultural show, Peradeniya Royal Botanic Gardens); Optional tours and optional activities; Train tickets (if you choose the scenic train); Hotel supplements when you travel on 24 December and 31 December (New Year), and the Christmas supplement on 24 December; Tips, porterage and personal expenses; Early check-in and late check-out at hotels; Travel insurance and bank charges.
Is the price the same on 24 and 31 December?
Not quite. Hotels charge a compulsory supplement for the nights of 24 December (Christmas Eve) and 31 December (New Year's Eve), and these supplements are not included in the tour price. If your dates include either night, tell us when you enquire and we will confirm the supplement for the hotels on your route before you book.
Can I customize this tour?
Yes. The order of stops, the number of nights in each place, the hotels and the activities can all be adjusted to your dates, pace and budget — this is a private tour built around you, not a fixed group departure. Tell us what you would like to change and we will send a revised quote.
What is the cancellation policy?
All cancellations must be received in writing by your Volata Tour Consultant. Cancellations received up to 61 days before departure result in the loss of the deposit. Between 60 and 46 days before departure a charge of 25% of the tour price applies; between 45 and 29 days, 50%; between 28 and 15 days, 75%; and 14 days or less before departure the entire tour price is forfeited. Airline tickets follow the refund policy of each airline, and special event tickets follow the policy of each event.
