Frequently Asked Questions

Why spend three nights in Habarana?

Habarana is close to Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and the elephant parks, so one base saves daily packing. Sigiriya is about 25 minutes away, and Polonnaruwa is roughly one to one and a half hours from Sigiriya. The extra night also gives you a quiet day to rest, which makes the Cultural Triangle far less tiring than a hotel change every evening.

When can I see the elephant Gathering at Minneriya?

The Gathering is usually best in the drier months, from about June to September and into October, when elephants come to the shrinking reservoir in large numbers. Outside those months you can still see elephants, but fewer, and the herds often move to nearby Kaudulla. Sightings are never promised. Park entry and jeep fees are paid separately on the day.

How long is the drive from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya?

Plan on three to four hours by road without stops, and more with the tea factory and waterfall breaks. The road climbs steadily with many bends, so anyone prone to car sickness may like the front seat. If you prefer, we can swap the drive for the scenic train, a ride of roughly four to five hours to Nanu Oya, with your driver meeting you at the station.

What is the best time of year for this 11 day tour?

No month is perfect, because Sri Lanka has two monsoons. April to September is drier in the Cultural Triangle, and December to March is drier in the hills and on the west coast. Many guests choose a shoulder month at either end, when both areas are fairly dry. Tell us your dates and we will talk through the trade-offs honestly.

Is the beach at Wadduwa good for swimming?

It is a quiet, uncrowded beach, and the sea is generally calmest from about December to March. During the south-west monsoon, waves and currents can be strong, so swim only where your hotel advises. In rough weather many guests prefer the hotel pool, and the beach is lovely for walking either way.

How hard is the Sigiriya climb for older travellers?

Most reasonably fit visitors manage it, but it is a long staircase of around 1,200 steps and the sun gets strong quickly. We plan it early in the day and you can go at your own pace, stopping as often as you wish. Anyone who prefers can enjoy the gardens and lower paths without going to the top.

Is this tour suitable for children?

Yes, for children who cope with car journeys. Elephants at Pinnawala, the village cart ride, the safari and the turtle hatchery tend to be big hits, and the beach days give everyone a break. The longest drives are the first journey to Habarana and the descent from Nuwara Eliya. Bring snacks, games and plenty of water for those.

Can the tour be shortened or changed?

Yes. Every itinerary is private and can be adjusted. You could take out the free beach day, add a night in Habarana to visit Polonnaruwa, swap a road leg for the scenic train or lengthen the Colombo tour. Send us your wishes and flight times and we will rework the days and drives so they still feel comfortable.

What's included in the 11-day tour price?

Is the price the same on 24 and 31 December?

Not quite. Hotels charge a compulsory supplement for the nights of 24 December (Christmas Eve) and 31 December (New Year's Eve), and these supplements are not included in the tour price. If your dates include either night, tell us when you enquire and we will confirm the supplement for the hotels on your route before you book.

Can I customize this tour?

Yes. The order of stops, the number of nights in each place, the hotels and the activities can all be adjusted to your dates, pace and budget — this is a private tour built around you, not a fixed group departure. Tell us what you would like to change and we will send a revised quote.
