Private Tour · 3★ & 2★ hotels 7 Days Sri Lanka Tour: Dambulla, Kandy, Tea Hills & WadduwaBegin with an easy night in Negombo, then spend two nights around Dambulla for Sigiriya, a village outing and elephants, before Kandy, tea hills and a Wadduwa beach finish. Private Tour · 3★ & 2★ hotelsModerate intensityEnglish-speaking guide Tour priceFromUSD 537per person A 7 day Sri Lanka tour with Dambulla and Nuwara Eliya packs the island's ancient rock sites, a wild elephant safari, a hill capital and the tea country into a single week, then lets you finish with sand underfoot. It is designed for travellers with limited time who still want a proper route rather than a checklist: one easy first night near the airport, two nights in the dry-zone heartland, one in Kandy, one in the cool hills and a last night on the coast. Who the 7 day Sri Lanka tour with Dambulla and Nuwara Eliya suitsThis itinerary works well for couples, friends and families with teenagers who want variety without constant hotel changes. You will spend several hours on the road on most days, but each drive is broken up by something worth seeing, so the kilometres pass easily. There is one genuine climb, at Sigiriya, and some walking at temples and gardens, otherwise the effort is modest. If you arrive late at night, the first evening asks nothing of you at all, and that is the point of starting in Negombo. From Negombo to the coast, night by nightYou sleep first in Negombo, a short drive from the airport, and the tour begins properly the next morning. The road north-east passes the elephant orphanage at Pinnawala before reaching the Dambulla area, where you stay for two nights. From there you travel to Kandy for a night, climb into the hills for a night in Nuwara Eliya, and spend your last evening at Wadduwa, a quiet beach town on the south-west coast. The route covers a lot of ground, so it is worth knowing that days four to six involve the longest stretches in the car. Experiences worth the early startThe first full day is the richest. You watch young elephants at Pinnawala, then reach Sigiriya in the afternoon, when the rock's face glows and the stairs are cooler than they are at midday. The second day trades stone for village life: a bullock cart between paddy fields, a paddle across a village lake in a wooden outrigger and a lunch cooked on a wood fire in a family home. You then step inside the painted caves of Dambulla, and in the late afternoon you head to Minneriya for a jeep safari among elephants beside an ancient reservoir. Further on, a spice garden in Matale prepares you for the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and the evening dance show in Kandy. Then come the tea slopes and a factory tasting, the roadside Ramboda Falls and a walk around Nuwara Eliya's market. The last two days follow waterfalls, St Clair's and Devon among them, down to the sea, and end with an optional morning on the Madu River before your flight. Comfort, meals and your driver-guideThroughout the week you travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking driver-guide, who explains each site, advises on timings and helps with small changes to the day. Hotels are comfortable and well placed, and the plan is bed and breakfast, so breakfast is included each morning and you choose where to have lunch and dinner. Lunches are left open so that you can stop at a local restaurant or the village kitchen. Entrance fees and the jeep safari fee are paid separately, and your guide will tell you what to expect before each one. Choosing the right time to goThis route crosses two weather systems, so the timing matters. The Dambulla area and Minneriya are best from roughly April to September, and the elephant gathering is strongest in the drier months. The hills and the beach are at their best from about December to March. Because the hill country stays cool all year, bring a warm layer for Nuwara Eliya whenever you travel, and a light rain jacket just in case. Make the week your ownIf a week feels too short, we can add a night in Sigiriya, swap Wadduwa for another beach or take the scenic train from Kandy to the hills. If you would rather have a gentler pace, we can drop a stop or two. Tell us when you land, what you enjoy and how active you like to be, and we will adapt the plan and send you a clear quote. Tour highlights
Day-by-day itinerary![]() Your Volata Travels driver is waiting in the arrivals hall, and the drive to Negombo takes only about twenty minutes. Whatever time your flight lands, there is nothing to do except check in and rest. Negombo is a lagoon-side fishing town with a long beach, and it is the easiest place to recover from a long flight before the road trip begins. If you arrive with energy, a walk along the shore or a stroll to the lagoon is pleasant, and for dinner you can eat at your hotel or ask your driver for a place nearby. Tomorrow starts after breakfast, so there is no need for an alarm tonight. Accommodation Sasha Transit Hotel or similar Included Activities
Landmarks
![]() After breakfast you leave Negombo and head inland, with Pinnawala about halfway to the Cultural Triangle. The orphanage was founded in 1975 on a coconut estate beside the Maha Oya river to look after elephants that had lost their mothers or been injured in the wild. You arrive in time to see the herd walk down the lane to the river, and it is a lively scene as the animals wade in and the calves squirt water over each other. Babies under three are still bottle-fed by keepers, which you can often watch from the viewing area. Give the visit about two hours. From Pinnawala the drive continues for roughly two more hours through palm groves and then drier, flatter country. Sigiriya is the afternoon's destination, close to Dambulla. Climbing later in the day suits the rock, because the heat eases and the cliff face turns a warm orange. The rock fortress was the palace of King Kashyapa in the 5th century. You enter through landscaped water gardens, then start up the stairs bolted to the rock. Halfway you reach a gallery of painted women, then a pair of huge stone paws at the base of the final stairway where a lion's head once framed the entrance. The summit is wide and open, with the foundations of rooms and a rock pool, and a long view of forest and lakes. Plan about two hours, take water and wear shoes with grip. You then check in at your hotel near Dambulla, about thirty to forty minutes away, where you can dine at the hotel restaurant or at a place nearby. Tomorrow is a full day, so rest well. ![]() Your second day in the dry zone begins in the countryside near Sigiriya, where a family welcomes you to their village. You ride a bullock cart along a dirt track beside paddy fields, with a farmer guiding the oxen, and then paddle across a small lake in a traditional outrigger canoe, which is surprisingly stable. Along the way you see a chena plot, a patch of forest cleared for seasonal crops such as chilli and millet. Back at the house you join the cooking. Coconut is scraped and squeezed for milk, curries simmer over a wood fire and rice steams in clay pots, and you sit down to eat what you have helped prepare. It is an unhurried few hours and a good way to meet people outside the tourist routes. In the afternoon you visit the cave temple at Dambulla, a short drive away. A flight of steps leads to a row of five caves under an enormous overhang, and the rock rises about 160 metres above the plains. Inside you find 153 Buddha statues, three royal figures and four deities, while painted scenes from the Buddha's life cover the ceilings. The complex has been a place of worship for over two thousand years, and UNESCO listed it in 1991. Take off your shoes, cover your knees and shoulders and expect warm stone underfoot. Late in the day you travel to Minneriya for an open jeep safari, which is part of the programme. The park is built around an ancient reservoir, and in the drier months elephants gather along its shore in impressive numbers. A game drive lasts two to three hours, and we then return you to your hotel, where you can choose a dinner spot to your liking. ![]() Today you leave the plains and climb gradually towards Kandy, a journey of roughly two and a half to three hours that is split by a stop in Matale. Hill gardens begin to appear and the air becomes noticeably softer. At the spice garden, a guide walks you through terraces where cardamom, pepper, clove, nutmeg, cinnamon and curry leaf grow side by side. You are encouraged to rub leaves and smell them, and you learn how the plants are harvested and prepared. Cardamom is a relative of ginger and likes the shade of tall trees, and the pods have to be picked by hand. Local farmers belong to a cooperative that sells their produce, and the garden also demonstrates herbal remedies used in Ayurvedic medicine. Buying is optional. You arrive in Kandy and head to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, beside the lake. The story told here is that a tooth of the Buddha was carried to the island in the 4th century hidden in the hair of a princess, and for centuries kings kept it as a symbol of their right to rule. Today pilgrims bring lotus flowers and stand in line to glimpse the casket. Women and men alike should cover their knees, and shoes are left outside. At five o'clock a Kandyan dance performance begins, lasting about an hour. Drummers set a rapid rhythm, dancers in elaborate headdresses leap and spin, and the show ends with fire-walking. After this you go to your hotel in Kandy, where you can dine at the hotel restaurant or ask your driver for a nearby suggestion. Landmarks
![]() Today you drive higher, into the heart of tea country. The road from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya takes roughly three to four hours with stops, and the scenery gets steadily greener and cooler as the bends tighten. Your first stop is a tea estate and factory. The central hills were turned over to tea by British planters in the 19th century, and the first plants are said to have been brought from China and tried out at the botanical gardens near Kandy. In the factory you see freshly picked leaves wither, roll, dry and get sorted by grade, and the warm, malty smell fills the building. The visit ends with a cup of Ceylon tea on a terrace overlooking the bushes, which is the best place to taste it. Further up the road you pause at Ramboda Falls, a tall, tiered cascade that tumbles beside the highway. Nearby stands a bright temple to Hanuman, with an eighteen-foot statue of the monkey god. You can stretch your legs, take photographs and buy a snack from a roadside stall. You reach Nuwara Eliya in the afternoon. At about 1,900 metres, it is the island's coolest town, known as Little England for its colonial-style cottages, gardens and lawns. A short tour takes in the central market, where mountain vegetables are heaped beside strawberries, and the lake and park. Evening temperatures fall quickly, so keep a jumper at hand. For dinner you can eat at your hotel or choose a nearby restaurant. Meals Breakfast Accommodation London Eye Hotel Nuwara Eliya or similar Included Activities
Landmarks
![]() This is the longest driving day of the week, so you leave Nuwara Eliya early. The road drops through tea estates and cloud-wrapped valleys towards the western lowlands, and there is a lot to see on the way down. The first highlight is St Clair's Falls, near the road between Talawakele and Hatton. It is one of the widest falls in the country, and locals sometimes call it the Little Niagara of Sri Lanka. The water spreads over a broad rocky ledge in two sections, set against green tea terraces, and the estate it runs through gave it its name. A viewpoint beside the road gives a clear look. Soon after you see Devon Falls, a slender cascade on a tributary of the Kotmale river, named after a pioneering coffee planter. It sits at about 1,100 metres above sea level and is best seen early, before the afternoon mist closes in. Both waterfalls are at their strongest after rain. From there the road leaves the hills and heads west, the air becomes warm and humid again, and you finally smell the sea. Wadduwa is a quiet beach town between Colombo and Kalutara. You check in at your hotel in the late afternoon, with time for a swim before dinner, and the evening is free to enjoy the sand and the sunset. Allow a full day for the journey, and bring a book and some snacks for the road. Meals Breakfast Accommodation Comfortable 3-star hotel in Wadduwa or similar Included Activities
Landmarks
![]() Wadduwa is only about an hour and a half from the airport, so you can enjoy a slow breakfast and a last swim. If your flight allows, your driver can take you south for the optional Madu River boat ride, where mangrove channels wind between small islands, past a cinnamon demonstration and a fish-spa platform. A turtle hatchery along the coast is another option. Please tell us your flight time early and we will plan accordingly. Your driver collects you, helps with the luggage and takes you to the airport in good time for check-in. Meals Breakfast Included Activities

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 7 days enough for Dambulla, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya?
It is enough for a good overview if you accept a brisk pace. You get Sigiriya, Dambulla, an elephant safari, Kandy and the tea hills, with a beach night at the end. The compromise is time: some days involve three or four hours on the road, and there is little room for lazing around. If you can add two days, we suggest an extra night in Sigiriya or Kandy.
What is the best time of year for this tour?
The route spans two climates. The Dambulla area and Minneriya are generally drier from April to September, while the hills and the south-west beach are drier from December to March. Neither half is unusable in the other season, but you may meet some showers. Nuwara Eliya is cool all year, so pack a warm layer, and your driver can adjust the plan to the weather.
Will I definitely see elephants at Minneriya?
Elephants are seen on most safaris here, and in the drier months large herds gather along the reservoir shore, but wildlife cannot be promised. The late-afternoon drive lasts two to three hours in an open jeep. In the wetter months the elephants are more spread out, and Kaudulla nearby may be the better choice, which your guide will advise on the day.
How hard is the Sigiriya climb?
It is a moderate climb of about 1,200 steps, some of them steep and exposed, and you should allow roughly two hours. Visiting in the afternoon avoids the harshest heat. Bring water, a hat and shoes with grip. If you prefer, you can stop at the painted gallery or the lion's paws and still enjoy the garden and the views, and your guide will wait with you.
How long are the drives each day?
Pinnawala to Dambulla and Sigiriya adds up to about four hours with stops, Dambulla to Kandy takes roughly two and a half to three hours, and Kandy to Nuwara Eliya takes about three to four. Day six from Nuwara Eliya to the coast is the longest of the trip. Your driver plans breaks, and every long drive includes something to see on the way.
Is this tour suitable for children?
Yes, for children who enjoy being outdoors. The elephant orphanage, the bullock cart and canoe, the safari and the beach tend to be favourites. The long drives and the Sigiriya stairs are the harder parts, so it suits older children and teenagers best. Tell us your children's ages and we can adjust the stops and add a rest day or extra beach time.
What should I wear and pack?
Light cotton clothes suit the plains and the coast, but bring a fleece or jumper for Nuwara Eliya, where evenings are cold. For temples you need clothing that covers knees and shoulders, and slip-on shoes are handy. Add a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent and swimwear. Neutral colours are best for the jeep safari.
Can I change the order or add a day?
Yes. Every Volata Travels tour is private and can be customised. You can add a night at Sigiriya, take the scenic train from Kandy to the hills, change the beach for another or spend more time on the coast. Send us your arrival date and interests and we will propose a revised plan with a clear price before you decide.
What's included in the 7-day tour price?

Is the price the same on 24 and 31 December?
Not quite. Hotels charge a compulsory supplement for the nights of 24 December (Christmas Eve) and 31 December (New Year's Eve), and these supplements are not included in the tour price. If your dates include either night, tell us when you enquire and we will confirm the supplement for the hotels on your route before you book.
Can I customize this tour?
Yes. The order of stops, the number of nights in each place, the hotels and the activities can all be adjusted to your dates, pace and budget — this is a private tour built around you, not a fixed group departure. Tell us what you would like to change and we will send a revised quote.
What is the cancellation policy?
All cancellations must be received in writing by your Volata Tour Consultant. Cancellations received up to 61 days before departure result in the loss of the deposit. Between 60 and 46 days before departure a charge of 25% of the tour price applies; between 45 and 29 days, 50%; between 28 and 15 days, 75%; and 14 days or less before departure the entire tour price is forfeited.
