Frequently Asked Questions

Is 8 days enough to see Sigiriya, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya?

It is enough for the highlights if you accept a steady pace. You will see elephants, Dambulla, Sigiriya, Kandy, the tea hills and the coast. The trade-off is time: day one and day six involve long drives. If you want a slower trip, we can add nights in Kandy or the hills and stretch the same route over ten days.

How long is the drive from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya?

Allow about three to four hours by road, depending on traffic and how long you stop, and note that the scenic train covers the same stretch more slowly. The road climbs through tea country and passes Ramboda, where there is a waterfall and a Hanuman temple. You will arrive in Nuwara Eliya by mid-afternoon, with time for the town tour before evening.

Is white-water rafting suitable for beginners?

Yes. The Kelani river at Kitulgala offers a short run with a trained guide, and no experience is needed. You wear a helmet and life jacket, listen to a briefing and paddle together. Water levels change with the weather, so the guide may adjust the stretch, and rafting is not suitable for very young children or non-swimmers. Fees are paid separately.

When do elephants gather at Minneriya?

The gathering usually peaks in the dry season, roughly between July and October, when the reservoir shrinks and elephants graze on the exposed shoreline. In other months you may still see elephants, but numbers change. Wildlife can never be promised, so the safari is best thought of as a good chance rather than a certainty.

What is the best time of year for this tour?

December to March is best for Kandy, the hills, rafting and the west coast, while April to September is better for Sigiriya and Minneriya. Because the route crosses both areas, you will always meet some weather. Tell us your travel month and we can suggest which activities to emphasise, or whether to reorder a few days so that the wetter stretch falls on the easier part of the programme.

How much walking and climbing is involved?

The main effort is the Sigiriya climb, about 1,200 steps with rests along the way, plus the steps up to Dambulla's caves. Everything else is light: gardens, temples and short walks. Good shoes, a hat and water help. If the climb worries you, tell your driver-guide and you can go at your own pace or stop at the lower terraces.

Do I need warm clothes?

Yes, for one evening. Nuwara Eliya sits at around 1,900 metres and nights can feel properly cold, so bring a fleece or jumper and long trousers. The rest of the tour is warm, so pack light clothing, a rain jacket, swimwear and covered clothes for temples. A pair of thin socks also helps on hot temple stones.

Can the tour start or end in Colombo instead?

Yes. Every Volata Travels itinerary can be changed, so we can start the trip from a Colombo hotel or end in the capital with a city tour and an extra night. The beach finish at Wadduwa is also flexible, and we can swap it for Bentota or Beruwala if you prefer. Just let us know when you enquire.

What's included in the 8-day tour price?

Meet and greet at Bandaranaike International Airport; 7 nights in 3-star and 2-star hotels (or similar), double or twin room sharing; a single room if you travel alone; Daily breakfast at your hotels (bed and breakfast); All transfers and sightseeing in a private air-conditioned vehicle; English-speaking driver-guide throughout the tour; Fuel, parking, driver accommodation and highway fees. The tour costs USD 600 per person when two adults share a room, or USD 1149 for one traveller in a single room, for 7 nights / 8 days. These prices are valid for travel from 8 October 2026 to 30 November 2027.

What's not included?

International flights and the Sri Lanka ETA visa fee; Lunches, dinners and drinks (breakfast is included); Entrance fees and activity fees (Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, Dambulla Cave Temple, Sigiriya Rock, Minneriya jeep safari, Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and cultural show, Peradeniya Royal Botanic Gardens, rafting and adventure activities, Madu River boat ride and more); Optional tours and optional activities; Train tickets (if you choose the scenic train); Hotel supplements when you travel on 24 December and 31 December (New Year), and the Christmas supplement on 24 December; Tips, porterage and personal expenses; Early check-in and late check-out at hotels; Travel insurance and bank charges.

Is the price the same on 24 and 31 December?

Not quite. Hotels charge a compulsory supplement for the nights of 24 December (Christmas Eve) and 31 December (New Year's Eve), and these supplements are not included in the tour price. If your dates include either night, tell us when you enquire and we will confirm the supplement for the hotels on your route before you book.

Can I customize this tour?

Yes. The order of stops, the number of nights in each place, the hotels and the activities can all be adjusted to your dates, pace and budget — this is a private tour built around you, not a fixed group departure. Tell us what you would like to change and we will send a revised quote.
