Frequently Asked Questions

Which parks does this tour visit, and how do they differ?

You visit three. Minneriya is a reservoir park where elephants gather in the drier months. Udawalawe is open grassland where elephants are easy to find all year. Yala is scrub and rock country famous for leopards. Because the habitats differ, the experiences do too, and the three jeep fees are paid separately.

Are we sure to see leopards or elephants?

No wildlife can be promised. Elephants are seen on most drives at Udawalawe, and Minneriya has many in the right season. Yala has a very high leopard population, but cats are secretive. Choosing the dawn and late-afternoon drives, using a good tracker and staying patient give you the best chance. We will not pretend otherwise.

Is 11 days enough for this route?

Eleven days gives enough time for each region without staying long anywhere. The longest drives are Habarana to Kandy, Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, Tissamaharama to Bentota and the airport run. If you want a slower pace we can add a night in the hills or at the coast, or take out one safari.

How hard is the Sigiriya climb?

It has about 1,200 steps, many open to the sun, and takes a good part of the morning. Most fit travellers cope if they start early, carry water, wear a hat and pause at each platform. If you do not want to climb, you can enjoy the water gardens and the view from below, and your driver-guide will adjust the day.

What is the best time of year?

February and March usually combine dry hills, a calm south-west coast and open safari parks. Minneriya is strongest from about July to October, and Yala and Udawalawe are best from February to September. Outside these months the tour still works, with greener scenery and fewer visitors, but expect showers. Nuwara Eliya is cold at night in every season.

Can we take the scenic train to Ella?

Yes. The hill railway runs from Nanu Oya, the station for Nuwara Eliya, to Ella and takes a few hours. Tickets are bought separately and seats must be booked in advance. Your driver-guide takes your luggage by road and meets you in Ella. Tell us when you enquire so we can reserve seats.

Is the tour suitable for children?

Yes, for children who enjoy animals and can manage early mornings and several hours in the car. The elephant orphanage, the Transit Home and the safaris are usually big successes. There are many steps at Sigiriya and Dambulla, which younger children may find tiring. Tell us the ages, and we will suggest changes.

What is not included in the tour?

Entrance fees, jeep safari fees, optional activities such as water sports or the Elephant Transit Home, train tickets and meals other than breakfast are paid separately. Hotel supplements apply on 24 and 31 December. Your private vehicle, English-speaking driver-guide, hotel stays with breakfast and airport transfers are part of the tour.

What's included in the 11-day tour price?

Meet and greet at Bandaranaike International Airport; 10 nights in 3-star and 2-star hotels (or similar), double or twin room sharing; a single room if you travel alone; Daily breakfast at your hotels (bed and breakfast); All transfers and sightseeing in a private air-conditioned vehicle; English-speaking driver-guide throughout the tour; Fuel, parking, driver accommodation and highway fees. What's not included?

Is the price the same on 24 and 31 December?

Not quite. Hotels charge a compulsory supplement for the nights of 24 December (Christmas Eve) and 31 December (New Year's Eve), and these supplements are not included in the tour price. If your dates include either night, tell us when you enquire and we will confirm the supplement for the hotels on your route before you book.

Can I customize this tour?

Yes. The order of stops, the number of nights in each place, the hotels and the activities can all be adjusted to your dates, pace and budget — this is a private tour built around you, not a fixed group departure. Tell us what you would like to change and we will send a revised quote.
