Private Tour · 4★ hotels 4 Days Bentota Beach Holiday: River, Mangroves & Sea – 4-Star Hotels4-star hotel version: Three nights at a Bentota beach hotel, with a Madu River boat safari, a free day for the water or a dawn whale-watching trip, and easy private transfers. Private Tour · 4★ hotelsRelaxing intensityEnglish-speaking guide Tour priceFromUSD 477per person A 4 day Bentota beach holiday is the simplest way to start or end a trip to Sri Lanka, or to spend a short break on its own. You land at the airport, are driven straight to the coast, and stay three nights in the same beach hotel. There are no hotel changes and no early starts you do not choose yourself. The few outings are short, and the rest of the time is yours to swim, read and eat well. Stay in 4-star hotelsThis version of the tour is booked in 4-star hotels for all 3 nights: Temple Tree Resort & Spa in Bentota, or similar hotels of the same standard. Rooms are double or twin, or single if you travel alone, with breakfast included each morning. The route, the sightseeing and your private driver-guide are the same as on the 3-star and 2-star version of this tour, so the difference is a more comfortable room, a better restaurant and pool, and in most places a quieter setting. Lunch, dinner, entrance fees, activity fees and train tickets are not included in the price. Who the 4 day Bentota beach holiday suitsThis stay is made for people who want rest more than sightseeing: couples after a long flight, families with young children, honeymooners, or travellers adding a few easy days to a longer journey. The physical demands are minimal, with a stroll on the sand being the most strenuous thing you must do, and nobody will ask you to keep to a timetable. If you want castles, temples and safaris, a longer circuit is a better match, but many guests combine this stay with another tour, using it as a soft landing or a final wind-down. Why BentotaBentota is a beach resort town at the mouth of the Bentota river, about two hours from the airport by road. The sand is wide, and the river side offers calm water, which is useful on days when the sea is rough. The town has a long tradition of Ayurvedic treatments, and you can also visit the gardens created by the Bawa brothers nearby. Beaches along this coast are at their calmest from roughly December to March. What the three nights look likeOn the first afternoon you are collected at the airport and driven to the coast, where you check in and take it easy. The second day starts slowly, with a free morning that you can fill with a swim, a spa session or a short sightseeing drive around Bentota. In the late afternoon you go to the Madu River, where a boat winds through mangrove channels and past small islands. There is a fish-spa stop, where tiny fish nibble your feet, and a turtle hatchery on the way back, where hatchlings are raised and released. On the third day you choose between water sports on the Bentota river and, for early risers, a whale and dolphin watching trip from Mirissa. The last morning begins with breakfast and ends with a transfer to the airport. Comfort, meals and your driverTransfers are in a private air-conditioned vehicle, with an English-speaking driver who meets you in the arrivals hall holding a name board. Hotels are on a bed-and-breakfast plan, so breakfast is included each morning and you pay for lunch and dinner yourself, whether at the hotel restaurant or at a place on the beach. The driver stays available for your outings and can suggest where to eat on the beach. Entrance fees, boat trips and water-sport charges are paid separately on the day, and nothing is added without your agreement. Best time for a Bentota beach stayThe south-west coast is driest and calmest roughly from December to March, and it is a good choice for those months when the east and the hill country are wet. The sea gets rougher in the monsoon months, from about May to September, when swimming is often limited to the river side or the hotel pool, though the days are still green and quiet. Whale watching off Mirissa is usually best between about November and April, and sightings are never certain. Pack a hat, sunscreen and a light layer for evenings, since the breeze off the water can feel cool after sunset, and bring a rain jacket in case a shower passes through. Make it your ownThe stay is easy to extend, and you do not have to decide everything in advance. Many guests add a few nights in the Cultural Triangle, a night in Galle Fort, or a longer south coast tour, while others swap the whale trip for a quiet day by the pool. If you are arriving early or leaving late, we can adjust the transfers. Send us your flight details and tell us whether you want to be active or lazy, and we will confirm the plan and your hotel options within a day or so. Tour highlights
Day-by-day itinerary![]() Your flight lands at Katunayake and your Volata Travels driver is waiting in the arrivals hall with a name board. From there the road runs south along the coast to Bentota, a drive of about two hours, with the sea appearing now and again between the palms and the little roadside stalls. Once you reach your beach hotel, check in and put your bags down. The day is meant to be empty, whatever time your flight comes in. Have a shower, order something cold to drink and walk down to the water. Bentota's beach is wide and the sand is soft, and the river runs into the sea close by, so there is plenty of scenery to take in on a slow stroll. If you are travelling with children, they will probably want to paddle straight away, and the shallow edges are a good place for that. Swimming in deeper water depends on the sea and the season. Between about December and March it is generally calm, and in the monsoon months the waves can be strong, so ask the lifeguards and your hotel staff before you go in. For dinner you can eat at the hotel restaurant or at a simple place on the beach, and the hotel staff can suggest somewhere if you ask. After a long journey, an early night is the best way to enjoy the rest of the stay. A little advice for the first evening: drink plenty of water, put on some sunscreen even if the sun has gone down, and avoid making firm plans for the following morning until you see how you feel. Jet lag is often worse on the second day than the first. Accommodation Temple Tree Resort & Spa or similar Included Activities

![]() The morning is free. Sleep in, have a long breakfast and decide how much you want to do. Some guests head straight for the sand, while others join a short drive around Bentota to see the town, the river and the surrounding villages. Your driver can also suggest a visit to the Bawa gardens, laid out by the Bawa brothers, or to a spa for an Ayurvedic treatment, a tradition that Bentota is known for. Anything you add is optional and paid on the day. In the late afternoon you set out for the Madu River, a wetland of mangrove islands and narrow channels just north of Galle. The estuary has 64 islands, some of them inhabited, and covers about 915 hectares. Seven tributaries feed it, and it has had protected sanctuary status since 2006. The boat glides under the mangrove roots and into open stretches of water, where you may see kingfishers, egrets, monitor lizards and fishermen at work. Along the way there is a small cinnamon-peeling demonstration, where a worker shows how the bark is stripped and rolled, and a stop at a temple island. At the fish-spa platform, tiny fish nibble gently at your feet, which tickles a lot. Take sun cream and a hat, and keep your camera strap round your wrist. On the return journey you visit a turtle hatchery on the coast near Kosgoda. Five kinds of sea turtle nest on these beaches. The hatcheries buy or collect eggs, protect them until they hatch, look after injured turtles and release the hatchlings at dusk. It is a short and informative visit, and children usually love it. Look, listen and ask questions, but leave the turtles alone. You are back at the hotel for an unhurried evening, with dinner wherever you prefer. ![]() Today you pick from two very different plans, and both leave you back at your hotel by the afternoon. The easy option is water sports at Bentota, whose river mouth is calm enough for beginners. You can hire a kayak, go for a banana-boat ride or try a jet-ski, and your hotel staff will point you to an operator. These activities are paid separately, and you should always wear the life jacket and listen to the instructions. If the sea is rough, stay on the river side, which is more sheltered. Afterwards you can cool off in the pool. The early-riser option is whale and dolphin watching from Mirissa, which is about two hours from Bentota by road. The trip means a very early start, well before dawn, because boats leave the harbour around five in the morning and spend several hours at sea. Mirissa is the best-known whale-watching harbour on the island, and blue whales and sperm whales pass offshore between roughly November and April, when the water is calm. Dolphins are seen on many trips. No operator can promise a sighting, and the swell can be uncomfortable, so take a travel-sickness tablet if you are prone to it, and wear a windproof layer and sun protection. Your driver brings you back to Bentota in time for a late lunch and a long rest. If you would rather do neither, that is a perfectly good plan too. Stay by the pool, swim, read and walk on the shore. Choose where to have dinner, at the hotel or at a beachside place, and keep the evening for repacking at a leisurely pace, before the last day. ![]() After breakfast you check out of the hotel and meet your driver for the transfer to the airport. The drive takes about two hours along the coast road, and your driver will set the departure time to suit your flight, with comfortable margin. If your flight leaves late, a last swim and an extended breakfast are a nice way to use the morning. Frequently Asked Questions
Is Bentota a good place for a 4 day beach holiday?
Yes. It has a wide beach, calm river water for activities, a long Ayurvedic tradition and easy access to the Madu River and a turtle hatchery. It is only about two hours from the airport, so you spend your time on the sand rather than in the car. For the best weather, travel between roughly December and March.
How far is Bentota from the airport?
It is roughly two hours by road along the coast. Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall and takes you straight to your hotel, and on the last day he drives you back, with enough margin for your flight. There is no need to book anything yourself, and if your flight is delayed, the driver follows it and adjusts.
What is the best time of year for a Bentota beach holiday?
The south-west coast is generally driest and calmest from about December to March. From May to September the sea is rougher and swimming may be limited to the river side or the pool, although the countryside is green and quiet. Whale watching from Mirissa is usually best from November to April.
What happens on the Madu River boat safari?
A boat takes you through mangrove channels and between small islands. You stop at a cinnamon-peeling demonstration, a temple island and a fish-spa platform, and you may see birds and monitor lizards. The trip is gentle and suits children. Boat and entrance fees are paid separately, and the whole outing takes up a relaxed late afternoon and early evening.
Is whale watching from Mirissa possible in a day trip from Bentota?
Yes, as an optional extra on the third day. It is a very early start, with a drive of about two hours each way, and boats leave around five in the morning. The season runs roughly November to April, and sightings are never certain. If you prefer a quiet day, you can skip it and stay at the hotel.
What water sports are available in Bentota?
The river mouth is calm and suits kayaking, banana-boat rides and jet-skiing. Rates and safety standards vary by operator, so your hotel or driver can recommend a reliable one. Activities are paid directly, and you should always wear a life jacket. If the sea is rough, stay on the river.
Is the holiday suitable for families and young children?
Yes, it is one of the easiest tours to do with children. You stay in one hotel, the drives are short, and the turtle hatchery and boat ride are popular with young travellers. Take care with sun and swimming conditions, and check the flags and lifeguards before going in the sea.
Can I extend this stay or combine it with a longer tour?
Yes. Many guests use Bentota as a start or end to a longer circuit through Sigiriya, Kandy and the hills, or add a night in Galle Fort. We can also add more beach nights or a night in a different resort. Tell us your dates and interests and we will adjust the plan and your hotel.
What should I pack for a Bentota beach holiday?
Pack swimwear, a hat, sunscreen, light cotton clothes, flip-flops and a light layer for the evening. If you plan to join the whale-watching trip, add a windproof jacket and a travel-sickness tablet. Modest clothing is needed only if you visit a temple, and a small waterproof pouch for your phone is handy on the boat.

If your dates include either night, tell us when you enquire and we will confirm the supplement for the hotels on your route before you book.
