Private Tour · 4★ hotels 5 Days Sri Lanka Tour: Dambulla, Sigiriya, Kandy & Bentota – 4-Star Hotels4-star hotel version: Rock, temple and sea in five days: Dambulla caves and Sigiriya from Habarana, a Kandy evening, the Peradeniya gardens, then the beach at Bentota. Private Tour · 4★ hotelsModerate intensityEnglish-speaking guide Tour priceFromUSD 651per person A 5 day Sri Lanka tour through Habarana, Kandy and Bentota is a compact way to see the island's rock, temple and sea in one short trip. It is meant for travellers with only a few days to spare, such as a stopover before a longer holiday, a first visit with limited leave or a family wanting culture followed by a beach. You land, drive inland the same day, spend a night in the Cultural Triangle, a night in the hill capital and two nights by the ocean, with your own driver-guide throughout. Stay in 4-star hotelsThis version of the tour is booked in 4-star hotels for all 4 nights: Amaya Lake in Habarana, Mahaweli Reach Hotel in Kandy and Temple Tree Resort & Spa in Bentota, or similar hotels of the same standard. Rooms are double or twin, or single if you travel alone, with breakfast included each morning. The route, the sightseeing and your private driver-guide are the same as on the 3-star and 2-star version of this tour, so the difference is a more comfortable room, a better restaurant and pool, and in most places a quieter setting. Lunch, dinner, entrance fees, activity fees and train tickets are not included in the price. Who the 5 day Sri Lanka tour through Habarana, Kandy and Bentota suitsShort does not have to mean frantic, but this route is busy at the start. Days 1 to 3 each combine a long drive with at least two stops, then days 4 and 5 slow right down. It works best for people who like to see a lot, do not mind early mornings and are happy to rest at the end. Children from about eight cope well, as do active older travellers, though the Sigiriya climb needs steady legs. If that does not suit you, the lower levels of the rock and its gardens are still worth the visit. The route in briefFrom the airport you head inland via the Pinnawala elephant orphanage and the Dambulla cave temple to Habarana, a forest and lake village that makes a handy base. The next morning you climb Sigiriya, stop at a spice garden near Matale and reach Kandy in time for the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and an evening dance show. On day 3 you visit the Peradeniya botanical gardens, a tea estate and a gem workshop before the descent to Bentota. Day 4 is for the Madu River and the turtles, with a free afternoon, and day 5 is the transfer to the airport. Rock, caves and a view from the topThe two big monuments of the first two days complement each other. At Dambulla you climb a stairway to a row of caves hidden beneath an overhanging rock, where painted ceilings and rows of seated Buddhas have drawn pilgrims for over two thousand years. At Sigiriya you start in the symmetrical water gardens, follow a staircase along the cliff and reach a summit about 200 metres above the plain, where the foundations of a palace look out over a sea of treetops. On a clear morning the view is the reward, and the earlier you go, the cooler and quieter it is. Kandy, tea and the coastKandy is the hill capital, and in the evening, drums echo through the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic as pilgrims bring flowers. Next day, the botanical garden at Peradeniya is a calm place to stretch your legs, and a tea estate nearby shows how leaf becomes the drink you taste at the end of the visit. The Madu River boat ride on day 4 is a gentle contrast, gliding between mangrove islands with stops for cinnamon, a fish spa and a turtle hatchery. Comfort, meals and your driver-guideYou travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking driver-guide who handles the logistics and explains what you see. Your room rate covers breakfast every morning at your hotel, while lunches and dinners are your choice, which suits a short trip because you can eat where you like on the road. Entrance fees are paid separately, and your guide will tell you what to expect at each site before you go in. When to go and how to adaptThe trip works in any month, because the hills and south-west coast are driest from roughly December to March while the Cultural Triangle is driest from April to September. Rain, when it comes, usually falls in short bursts. If you can add a night, a second night in Habarana lets you visit Polonnaruwa, and a third at the coast gives you a proper free day. Tell us your flight times and interests, and we will fit the route to your arrival and departure. Tour highlights
Day-by-day itinerary![]() Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall and loads the vehicle, then begins the drive inland. The full journey from the airport to Habarana, including stops, takes most of the day, so rest on the road if you have just landed. The first leg heads north-east towards Colombo and the hills, and the landscape slowly changes from busy town to coconut estates and then to small paddy villages. Your first stop is Pinnawala, about an hour and a half beyond Colombo, where orphaned elephants have been cared for since the 1970s beside the Maha Oya river. Elephants are walked down to the water twice daily, so your guide times the visit for the bath. You can stand on the bank and watch a whole herd splashing and trumpeting, with babies close to their mothers. The youngest calves are still fed by bottle, so ask the staff whether a feeding is due. Wear shoes that can get muddy, bring a hat, and allow roughly an hour. Next comes Dambulla. A stairway climbs to the entrance of the cave temple, which tucks five shrines under a huge rock face. Every ceiling is covered in painted scenes, and more than 150 statues of the Buddha fill the interior, along with kings and gods. UNESCO has listed the complex, and the caves have been a place of prayer for over two thousand years. You leave your shoes by the steps, so socks protect your feet from the hot stone, and your shoulders and knees need covering. Allow about 90 minutes. From Dambulla the hotel in Habarana is a short drive, and you arrive in the late afternoon. The hotel is set among forest and lakes, and the evening is for a swim, a cold drink and an early night. Tomorrow starts early. Accommodation Amaya Lake or similar Included Activities

![]() Eat an early breakfast, because Sigiriya is best before the heat builds. It is about 25 minutes from Habarana to the gate. The rock stands alone above the forest, and you can see it from a long way off as your vehicle approaches. The site was a royal citadel in the 5th century. Your guide leads you through the water gardens first, where ponds, paths and terraces were laid out with careful symmetry, and then up the rock itself. Stairways bolted to the cliff take you past the sheltered gallery of painted women, then along the Mirror Wall and between two giant stone paws, the remains of a lion gateway. A last series of steps, roughly 1,200 from the bottom, leads to the summit, about 200 metres above the plain. There you find the outline of the king's palace, a rock-cut pool and a broad panorama over jungle and lakes, with Dambulla's rock visible on the horizon. The climb takes around two to three hours with stops. Carry water, wear grippy shoes and a hat, and move at your own pace. The lower sections are very rewarding if you prefer not to go right to the top. After a quick lunch you set off for Kandy, a drive of roughly three hours. Halfway you stop at a spice garden near Matale, where a guide shows the plants behind the kitchen cupboard: cardamom, which is hand-picked in the shade, nutmeg, cloves, pepper and cinnamon. You also learn how herbal products are used in Ayurvedic care. You can buy something small, or just smell your way through. In the late afternoon you check in at your Kandy hotel, then visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, home of the revered tooth of the Buddha, said to have arrived hidden in a princess's hair in the 4th century. The drums and flower offerings of the evening ritual are moving to watch. A Kandyan dance show follows, usually starting around five and lasting an hour, with drummers, acrobats and a fire-walking finale. Landmarks
![]() Today you leave the hills and head for the sea, but only after a few unhurried hours in Kandy. After breakfast you visit the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya, about five kilometres from the centre. They sit in a bend of the Mahaweli river at around 460 metres above sea level and cover 147 acres. Gardens have existed here since the 14th century, and the current layout dates to the early 19th. More than 4,000 plant species grow here, from orchids and spices to tall palms. Long avenues give shade and make easy walking. Two hours is enough to see the orchid house and the great trees. Next you drive to a tea estate in the hills, where the guide shows how fresh leaf is plucked, withered, rolled, fermented, dried and graded. A tasting follows over a valley of terraces, and fresh tea is surprisingly different from teabags. The nearby gem museum and workshop is the next short stop, with a reconstructed mine and cutters at work. Sri Lanka has long been a source of sapphires, and you are free to browse without buying. Lunch can be taken in Kandy or on the road. The drive down to Bentota covers a long distance, about five hours in all with a break, and passes through Colombo's outskirts and along the coast road. It is a tiring day, so keep snacks and water in the vehicle and rest in the afternoon. You arrive at your beach hotel in the evening, and the first sight of the Indian Ocean is the best way to end the day. Check in, take a walk on the sand if you have energy, and have a quiet meal by the sea. Meals Breakfast Accommodation Temple Tree Resort & Spa or similar Included Activities
Landmarks
![]() You wake up on the coast, and today needs no early start. After breakfast your driver takes you a short way south to the Madu River, a wetland of mangrove islands and quiet channels. A boat takes you through the maze of trees, and the guide points out kingfishers, herons and monitor lizards. The estuary has 64 islands in all, and the whole wetland covers about 915 hectares. It has been a protected sanctuary since 2006. The ride includes stops at a small island where cinnamon bark is peeled and rolled into quills, and at a floating platform where tiny fish nibble the skin of your feet, a tickling experience that most guests find funny. You can also visit a temple on one of the islands. The whole outing takes around two hours, and you should bring a hat, sunscreen and insect repellent. On the way back you stop at a turtle hatchery on the coast. Five species of sea turtle come ashore to lay eggs on this coast, and the hatchery protects the eggs, cares for injured animals and releases hatchlings into the sea. You see tanks with turtles of different sizes, and a guide explains the cycle in simple terms. The afternoon is free. The hotel pool, the beach and the riverbank are all close, and you can add optional extras such as a kayak or banana-boat ride on the Bentota river, or a massage at an Ayurvedic spa. Dinner is your choice, and the evenings are pleasant on the sand. Meals Breakfast Accommodation Temple Tree Resort & Spa or similar Included Activities

![]() After breakfast you can swim one last time or take a final walk along the beach before checking out. Your driver collects you for the transfer to the airport, which takes roughly two hours, and the departure time is set according to your flight. Allow a comfortable margin and let your driver know your flight details in advance. Bring all your belongings from the room, and keep some snacks and water handy for the road. Frequently Asked Questions
Is 5 days enough for Sigiriya, Kandy and the beach?
It is enough for a good taste. You see Pinnawala, Dambulla, Sigiriya, a spice garden, Kandy's relic temple, Peradeniya, tea and the Madu River in five days, with two nights by the sea. The trade-off is long drives on days 1 and 3. If you can add a night, a second night in Habarana or Kandy makes the pace much calmer.
What happens if my flight lands very early or very late?
Tell us your flight number when you book, and we will plan around it. If you land in the early morning, the drive inland begins straight away, and you can rest in the vehicle. If you arrive late at night, we can add a night near the airport and start the tour the next day. We never promise exact times, because arrivals vary.
How hard is the Sigiriya climb?
It is the main physical effort of the tour. There are about 1,200 steps, many of them metal stairways attached to the cliff, and the climb takes two to three hours with rests. Go in the morning, take water and wear sturdy shoes. If you do not want to reach the top, the gardens and the lower terraces are worth seeing on their own.
Are meals included in this 5 day tour?
Breakfast is included every day at your hotel. Lunches, dinners and drinks are paid by you, so you can choose restaurants along the way or eat at your hotel. Your driver-guide will suggest good local places, from simple rice-and-curry stops to beachside restaurants. Just tell your driver-guide what kind of food you fancy, and they will point you to a suitable place.
When is the best time to do this route?
You can do it all year. The hills and the south-west coast are at their driest from about December to March, and the Cultural Triangle is driest from about April to September. Rain tends to come in short bursts, so mornings are often clear. Shoulder months bring greener scenery and fewer visitors, so it is also a good option.
How long is the drive from Kandy to Bentota?
Allow roughly five hours of driving, plus the time at the tea estate, gem museum and botanical gardens. The route passes Colombo's outskirts before turning south along the coast. It is the longest transfer of the trip, so we keep the sightseeing earlier in the day and suggest light snacks. You arrive at the beach in the evening.
What should I wear and bring?
Pack light cotton clothes, a hat, sunscreen and sturdy shoes for the Sigiriya steps. Shoulders and knees must be covered at temples, and you will take off your shoes, so socks help on hot stone. Bring a swimsuit, insect repellent for the river boat ride, and a light jacket for the cooler evening in Kandy. A small day bag is useful.
Is the Madu River boat ride safe for children?
Yes, the boats are slow and travel through sheltered channels. Children usually enjoy the fish spa and the turtles, though very young ones should stay seated and close to an adult, and you should ask for life jackets before boarding. The sun is strong on the water, so bring hats and sunscreen. The hatchery stop is short and easy for all ages.
What's included in the 5-day tour price?
Meet and greet at Bandaranaike International Airport; 4 nights in 4-star hotels (or similar), double or twin room sharing; a single room if you travel alone; Daily breakfast at your hotels (bed and breakfast); All transfers and sightseeing in a private air-conditioned vehicle; English-speaking driver-guide throughout the tour; Fuel, parking, driver accommodation and highway fees. The tour costs USD 651 per person when two adults share a room, or USD 1258 for one traveller in a single room, for 4 nights / 5 days. These prices are valid for travel from 8 October 2026 to 30 November 2027.

Is the price the same on 24 and 31 December?
Not quite. Hotels charge a compulsory supplement for the nights of 24 December (Christmas Eve) and 31 December (New Year's Eve), and these supplements are not included in the tour price. If your dates include either night, tell us when you enquire and we will confirm the supplement for the hotels on your route before you book.
Can I customize this tour?
Yes. The order of stops, the number of nights in each place, the hotels and the activities can all be adjusted to your dates, pace and budget — this is a private tour built around you, not a fixed group departure. Tell us what you would like to change and we will send a revised quote.
What is the cancellation policy?
All cancellations must be received in writing by your Volata Tour Consultant. Cancellations received up to 61 days before departure result in the loss of the deposit. Between 60 and 46 days before departure a charge of 25% of the tour price applies; between 45 and 29 days, 50%; between 28 and 15 days, 75%; and 14 days or less before departure the entire tour price is forfeited.
