Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need experience for the rafting and abseiling?

No. Instructors give a full briefing, fit your helmet, harness and life jacket and stay with you throughout. Rafting is open to anyone from the age of ten who is comfortable in water, and abseiling is done on a controlled rope. You should be reasonably fit and able to follow instructions. If you have a back, heart or joint condition, mention it before the tour.

How difficult are the rapids on the Kelani river?

The run covers about five kilometres with five major and four minor rapids, which is a lively but beginner-friendly stretch. Water levels vary with rainfall, so the team checks conditions on the day and can shorten or change the route if the river is too high. Calm sections between rapids give you time to rest and look around.

Will I definitely see elephants at Minneriya?

Elephants are often seen there, but wildlife is never certain. The famous Gathering is at its best in the dry season, roughly July to October, when herds come to the reservoir shore. At other times you may see fewer animals, though deer, buffalo and birds are common. The jeep safari is a late-afternoon drive, which gives the best light.

What is the best time of year for this tour?

December to March suits the river and the south-west coast best, while the Cultural Triangle and Minneriya are better from April to October. Rafting is possible in many months, but heavy rain can affect conditions. If you tell us your travel dates, we can advise which parts of the route are likely to be at their best.

How long are the drives?

Colombo to Dambulla takes about four hours, Habarana to Sigiriya roughly twenty-five minutes and Sigiriya to Kandy two and a half to three hours. Kandy to Kitulgala is around two hours, and Kitulgala to Waskaduwa about two and a half. The last drive from the coast to the airport is roughly an hour and a half.

What should I pack for the adventure days?

Bring a swimsuit, quick-drying shorts or leggings, a rash vest if you like one, strapped sandals or old trainers, a towel and a full change of clothes. Add sunscreen, a hat, insect repellent and a waterproof bag for your phone. Temple visits need covered shoulders and knees, so pack one set of lightweight long clothing.

Is this tour suitable for families?

It works well for families with children aged ten and older, because that is the minimum age for rafting. Younger children can enjoy the elephants, caves, village walk and beach days, but the rafting would need to be skipped or replaced. Tell us your children's ages and we can adjust the activities.

Are the activities and entrance fees included?

The abseiling, rock-pool trek and rafting are part of the programme and are arranged for you. Temple and site entrance fees and the Minneriya jeep and park charges are paid separately on the day. Breakfast is included every day at the hotel, while lunch, dinner and drinks are paid by the guest. Your driver-guide can explain costs in advance.

Can I add more beach time or change the route?

Yes. Every Volata Travels tour is private and can be adjusted. You could add a night at the beach, swap Colombo for a night in Negombo, include the Pinnawala elephant orphanage or extend the Cultural Triangle section. Send us your preferences and travel dates, and we will rework the plan and send a quote.

What's included in the 7-day tour price?

Meet and greet at Bandaranaike International Airport; 6 nights in 4-star hotels (or similar), double or twin room sharing; a single room if you travel alone; Daily breakfast at your hotels (bed and breakfast); All transfers and sightseeing in a private air-conditioned vehicle; English-speaking driver-guide throughout the tour; Fuel, parking, driver accommodation and highway fees. The tour costs USD 783 per person when two adults share a room, or USD 1462 for one traveller in a single room, for 6 nights / 7 days. These prices are valid for travel from 8 October 2026 to 30 November 2027.

What's not included?

International flights and the Sri Lanka ETA visa fee; Lunches, dinners and drinks (breakfast is included); Entrance fees and activity fees (Dambulla Cave Temple, Minneriya jeep safari, Sigiriya Rock, Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and cultural show, rafting and adventure activities, Madu River boat ride, turtle hatchery); Optional tours and optional activities; Train tickets (if you choose the scenic train); Hotel supplements when you travel on 24 December and 31 December (New Year), and the Christmas supplement on 24 December; Tips, porterage and personal expenses; Early check-in and late check-out at hotels; Travel insurance and bank charges.

Is the price the same on 24 and 31 December?

Not quite. Hotels charge a compulsory supplement for the nights of 24 December (Christmas Eve) and 31 December (New Year's Eve), and these supplements are not included in the tour price. If your dates include either night, tell us when you enquire and we will confirm the supplement for the hotels on your route before you book.

Can I customize this tour?

Yes. The order of stops, the number of nights in each place, the hotels and the activities can all be adjusted to your dates, pace and budget — this is a private tour built around you, not a fixed group departure. Tell us what you would like to change and we will send a revised quote.

What is the cancellation policy?
