Frequently Asked Questions

Is 13 days enough for Sigiriya, Kandy, the hills, Yala and the beach?

Yes, and it feels unhurried. Three nights in Habarana cover Sigiriya, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa without repeated packing, two nights in Kandy and two in Nuwara Eliya give you the hill country, and Yala fits neatly on the way to the coast. The final three nights at Bentota are deliberately slow, so the trip finishes with rest instead of another long drive.

What is the best time of year for this 13 day Sri Lanka tour?

There is no perfect month, because the route crosses two weather zones. The hills and the south-west coast are driest from about December to March, while the Cultural Triangle is driest from April to September. Yala is at its best in the drier months, roughly February to September. Whatever you choose, expect a little rain somewhere and enjoy greener scenery and fewer visitors in the shoulder seasons.

How hard is the Sigiriya climb and can everyone do it?

The climb has about 1,200 steps, many of them metal stairways fixed to the rock, and takes roughly three hours with stops. It is steady rather than technical. Go early, carry water, wear shoes with grip and rest as often as you like. If someone prefers not to climb to the top, the water gardens, the frescoes and the Mirror Wall can still be enjoyed on the lower sections.

How long is the train ride from Kandy to Nanu Oya?

Allow roughly four to five hours on the train. Your driver takes you to Kandy station and meets you at Nanu Oya with the luggage, so you only carry a day bag. Seats are limited and booked in advance, and tickets are paid separately. If the train is full or you prefer to drive, the road journey takes about three to four hours.

Will we see a leopard in Yala?

Yala has one of the highest leopard densities known, so your chances are good, but wild animals cannot be promised. Elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, buffalo, peacocks and many birds are seen on most drives. Going at first light, staying quiet and listening to your tracker improves your odds. Jeep and entrance fees are paid separately, and the park closes for a period each year, so we always check.

Is the drive from Yala to Bentota too long in one day?

It is the longest day of the tour. The road from Tissamaharama to Galle takes about three hours, and Bentota is roughly an hour beyond. We therefore keep the stops at the blowhole, the stilt fishermen, Galle Fort, the Madu River and the turtle hatchery short, and drop any of them if the group is tired. The next two days are free.

What should I pack for the hill country and the coast?

Bring light, breathable clothes for the Cultural Triangle and the beach, a warm layer or jacket for Nuwara Eliya, where evenings are cold, and a rain jacket. Shoulders and knees must be covered at temples, so pack a scarf or long trousers. Add sturdy shoes for Sigiriya, a hat, sunscreen and binoculars if you have them, and a small day bag for the train.

Is this tour suitable for children and older travellers?

It works well for families with children from about eight, and for active older travellers, because most days involve a drive and a short walk. The Sigiriya climb, the early Yala safari and the long travel day from Ella are the demanding parts. We can shorten or skip them, add rest time or reduce the pace. Tell us ages and mobility when you enquire.

Can the free days at Bentota be used for something else?

Yes. The two free days can be used for river sports, an Ayurveda treatment, the Bawa brothers gardens, a cooking class or simply the beach. In the whale season, roughly November to April, you can swap one for an early whale-watching trip from Mirissa. You can also add a night elsewhere, such as Galle or Ella. Just ask when you enquire.

What's included in the 13-day tour price?

Is the price the same on 24 and 31 December?

Not quite. Hotels charge a compulsory supplement for the nights of 24 December (Christmas Eve) and 31 December (New Year's Eve), and these supplements are not included in the tour price. If your dates include either night, tell us when you enquire and we will confirm the supplement for the hotels on your route before you book.

Can I customize this tour?

Yes. The order of stops, the number of nights in each place, the hotels and the activities can all be adjusted to your dates, pace and budget — this is a private tour built around you, not a fixed group departure. Tell us what you would like to change and we will send a revised quote.
