Frequently Asked Questions

Is 9 days enough for Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, Yala and the coast?

Nine days is enough to see the main sights once, but it is a travelling holiday. You change hotels five times and some days include long drives, so you will not have much time to linger. If you prefer a gentler pace, we can remove Waskaduwa and finish in Colombo, add a night in Ella or Kandy, or move to one of our longer itineraries. Most guests who choose this version like the variety and the absence of backtracking.

Do I have to book the scenic train to Ella myself?

Train tickets are not included in the tour price and are bought separately, and seats must be reserved in advance because the scenic services are popular. Tell us your dates when you enquire and we will arrange the booking for you. Your driver-guide takes you to Nanu Oya station, meets you at Ella and carries your luggage by road, so you travel light on the train.

How difficult is the Sigiriya climb?

Expect about 1,200 steps, some on open metal staircases, in heat. Most reasonably fit people manage it by going slowly and resting at the viewing platforms. Start early, carry water, wear shoes with grip and bring a hat. If you are nervous about heights or stairs, you can still enjoy the water gardens and the base of the rock, and your driver-guide will adapt the morning to what you want.

Will I definitely see a leopard in Yala?

No wildlife sighting can be promised. Yala has one of the highest leopard densities known anywhere, and there is a good chance of seeing elephants, crocodiles, peacocks and many birds on a morning drive, but leopards are shy and sightings depend on luck. Trackers share information, which improves the odds. The park has an annual closure, so dates are always checked, and you pay the jeep fee separately.

What is the best time of year for this tour?

The loop crosses several climate zones, so every month suits some parts better than others. The hills, the west and the south coast are driest from about December to March, the Cultural Triangle from April to September, and Yala from February to September. February to April is the safest overall window. Nuwara Eliya is cool all year, and rain can fall in any season, so bring a light waterproof.

How long are the drives between the stops?

Typical journeys are about three hours from the airport side to Sigiriya, three hours from Sigiriya to Kandy, three to four hours from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya, around two hours from Ella to Tissamaharama and roughly three hours from Tissamaharama to Galle. Each long drive has sightseeing built in, and your driver-guide stops for lunch, photographs or a rest whenever you ask.

Is the tour suitable for children and older travellers?

Children from around eight who enjoy early starts usually do very well, especially with the elephants, the train and the safari. Older travellers should know there are many steps at Sigiriya and Dambulla, uneven ground at the Nine Arch Bridge and long hours in the vehicle. All of these can be shortened or skipped, so tell us about mobility needs and we will plan around them.

What is included, and what do I pay for separately?

The price covers your private air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking driver-guide, hotel accommodation with breakfast and airport transfers. Entrance fees, jeep safari fees, train tickets, optional activities and meals other than breakfast are paid separately. Hotel supplements apply on 24 and 31 December. We will send a written list with your quote so there are no surprises.

What's included in the 9-day tour price?

Is the price the same on 24 and 31 December?

Not quite. Hotels charge a compulsory supplement for the nights of 24 December (Christmas Eve) and 31 December (New Year's Eve), and these supplements are not included in the tour price. If your dates include either night, tell us when you enquire and we will confirm the supplement for the hotels on your route before you book.

Can I customize this tour?

Yes. The order of stops, the number of nights in each place, the hotels and the activities can all be adjusted to your dates, pace and budget — this is a private tour built around you, not a fixed group departure. Tell us what you would like to change and we will send a revised quote.
